Plonk all the easily obtained and cheap SE gear onto a NB8B VVT engine. All I would need is...

Turbo
Manifold
Exhaust
Intercooler
Engine Management (probably have to be non SE)

Costs....
$1000 parts, second hand
S1000 install
S1500 engine management and dyno.

Achievable?
The VVT is the same high comp motor as a SP - would it be way more awesome than a standard SE

Just a small point, would also need the SE injectors and some water oil lines as well.

T25 setup will cost not a lot more used and be FAR better.

Maybe true but I am looking for a strictly minimalist approach to start off with. KISS.
Say my NB8B has 95rwkw now, I would be happy with 125-130 rwkw and not compromising the engine.

All these parts are cheap cast offs from SE owners who really want something special, but we know they fit and being Mazda OEM are safe and reliable.

A cheap T25 setup would only come from the MiataTurbo guys would it not?

SE intercooler available for free from me. Not quite worth the money.

All SE donations happily accepted.

good deals for t25 kits come up on here occasionally.

I really recommend going a t25 or t28 kit. just think there has to be a reason the se guys upgrade to it. the only other thing you may have to upgrade is the clutch.

our engines are pretty forgiving for turbos and even poor tuning (to a limit).
they are not a ticking timebomb as soon as you turbo.

one thing is forsure though... youll love the turbo

I suppose the fact that the Mazda dropped the VVT and plumped for low compression pistons has got me a bit nervous about turbo power on a NB8B engine. Still the SP appears to be durable enough.

You will also need an SE water pump inlet, SE radiator support brackets, SE intercooler brace bar, SE sump, SE or early NA8 block (or yours drilled and tapped for hard lines).

No. Plus you will have the additional problem of setting up an aftermarket ECU to run the VVT - the std NB8B ECU won't work with your turbo install, and the SE ECU won't run the VVT.

Already figured a ECU and tune would have to be budgeted for, $1500, see above list.

Plus you have the high comp NB8B to start with.

The only ecu and tune you'll get for that is a mega squirrel and some fine tuning on a dyno. Vvt adds extra complexity (time). A ground up tune from a shop is likely to be min 1500 alone assuming they are familiar with the ecu.

Edit: I noticed auto correct like squirrel more than squirt... But I left it.

You can make nice power and torque with Vvt but not really the way to go on a se cast offs / shoe string budget. I think you'll find it Cheaper in the long run to just buy a car done or do it properly the first time.
