how to know if clutch is holding power

Postby spaztikcamel » Sat Oct 01, 2011 8:28 pm

hello

I was wondering how do i know if i should upgrade my clutch?

I have turboed my car etc and am not sure if the clutch is slipping
I know the stock clutch (na6) is supposed to hold only around 150hp
sadly I have no idea how much power I do have

How would I tell whether I have power induced clutch slip?
would I smell it?

thanks for your time

Revs will accelerate faster than the engine does.

What turbo, what engine mods, what exhaust size, how much boost?

td04, cops, diypnp, ebc, 10psi, 2.5" exhaust etc

I understand the revs should go up faster than the car accelerates but is this very noticeable or sorta only slightly?

shattered if I am still under 150hp...

Nah it looks ok. Looks like youve maybe copied a few generic ones ive seen a few times am I right...?

but its fine, well.. most importantly, at full boost full revs your timing is about spot on so yes your well past 150whp unless you have a big issue somewhere. Its likely your clutch is slipping a little, and youre due for a new one.

happy ? :D

damn you are good. lol you knew you were right.

having a guess id say thats probs why I have not noticed power gains in the last couple of mods.
I honestly was starting to think you get that used to extra power you dont even notice increases all too much.

ok sure

first is Td04 (i think 9b) the manifold is cast and f'd if i know who made it its got no brand on it its top mount and has an odd 3bolt flange
stock intake manifold
2.5" downpipe to 2.5" system - great highflow cat - magnaflow muffler.

I had a wrx tmic with 2" piping but recently changed this to a 27x7x2.5" IC with 2.5" piping
pod filter picking up strait from behind the radiator
stock clutch and sadly diff (lucky car came with crappy tyres)
stock brakes (dot 4.1 fluid)
diypnp- map sensor- 470cc rx7 - toyota cops- fuel tuning done pretty much entirely using autotune function - innovate mtxl-
vl tps- ebc.

pretty much all emissions gear stripped from engine bay

minor weight reduction

coilovers, shortshifter

thats about it that i can think of nothing special as im no mechanic just a computer nerd with an interest in mechanics

mods to come are ewg (have to get it welded into manifold and piped to downpipe) CLUTCH! lol, diff, coolant reroute and possibly bigger rad, sway bars and 6ul's with 275 hoosiers :D

Why go to the effort of EWG? Especially with cutting and welding a cast manifold..?

Why not just go to a 2560 and a new manifold and enjoy the 240rwhp?

the ewg is only going on if i get boost creep which seems to happen if i try for a little more power

but from what ive gathered from your post its my turbo thats holding me back??
I thought it was my tune
