Turbo NC?

Postby Madanark » Tue Jul 19, 2011 10:38 pm

I made the mistake of talking to my brother (self made mechanic) about supercharging my NC with GT+/Danny's HKS centrifugal blower kit. His response was "why not turbo it?". I explained about the aussie NC problem with the steering collumn (lack of space) and even showed it to him but he still thinks that he could fabricate a plenumn style exhaust manifold, bolt a GT2860 or similar to it and still have enough room to fit an exhaust to the midpipe. His main argument was that people said there wasn't enough room to turbo an E42 M3 but he still did it with a similar setup...

I'm trying to get some extra grunt from the NC (end game goal of around 180rwkw) but it is still my daily driver. I want something that is simple and practical (ish) as I'm not a mechanic. Trying to explain the word "practical" to someone who expects his recently built Ultima GTR to be a daily driver is kind of difficult.

So the question is:
Do you think it is better to go with a simple kit that is (will be) proven to work and has some nice results?
Or roll the dice and go with a custom job that could either be great or pull the pin on a genade that used to be my engine? :)

Any competent bloke can turbo an nc. If he just built an ultima, and hes done turbo manis before do it.

Come back and give all the nc owners a good ribbing because you were first.

An average 4 banger hasnt changed in 30 years so do it.

I sure as hell know I would. I know one bloke spent at least ten on a cosworth blower and made a measley 200rwhp. I dont know what the bottom end is good for but im sure a 2860 will get you there.

It doesnt get done because the average sort of bloke who buys an nc only want brand name kits or big dollar custom stuff. This is why you see 250rwhp daily na6s that are cheap and reliable on a stock longblock but no ncs, because noone will do it.
Please do it.

As another option, is there any reason you have not considered a BEGi turbo kit for the NC (as long as you confirm with them that it fits LHD Australian models)? At less than AUD$3500 (USD$3695) plus shipping + installation + dynotuning, it could be a easier route to travel and still have technical after sales support as long as you are not expecting Cosworth build quality.

Full kit installed (neat and factory looking?):

Manifold and turbo only:

BEGi got 249 rwhp on 8psi on a stock diameter exhaust .

Food for thought. 8)

Show your brother the 2 BEGi NC turbo kits, might help give him some ideas. .. doh les beat me to it!
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

I suspect the LHD/RHD issue is serious.

Sure is food for thought.

I did a lot of research on the begi kit before I bought the NC but it just doesn't fit right hand drive models. There is next to no space due to where the steering collumn comes through the firewall. It could be an option to get the kit and just build the exhaust manifold and dump pipe if I decide to go down this path. It is a tempting idea...
I'll probably end up waiting till the GT+ supercharger kit is available before making a decision. I've got a few more mods to do to keep me busy anyway.

I wouldn't get a cossie blower as I'm not a big fan of the way a roots type produces power.
It would be difficult to go down the path of forced induction on an NC and still walk away with change from $12k when you aren't doing the work yourself. The guide to this is get a good idea of what it will cost (about $6k) and then double it. The money just seems to dissapear. :)
The NC engine sounds like it can handle about 10-12PSI boost reliably but I'm willing to find out. :)

Send an email off to Stephanie at BEGI.
When I was researching I was told that the turbo kit WILL fit RHD NCs with some very minor modifications to plumbing.
There are a couple installed on cars in UK.

If you want to keep costs under control , go with something that has been done for you eg the BEGI kit if it fits.....

"(as long as you confirm with them that it fits LHD Australian models)? " LES....comon mate havent you had your coffee yet, maybe try the other australian factory option of RHD.....

My reply from Stephanie was the kit does NOT fit RHD cars, neither will they sell you just the manifold.

Stephanie states that they will fit here:

http://forum.miata.net/vb/showthread.ph ... +turbo+RHD

I'd suggest you go to the big forum and ask the question there.
I'm sure Stephanie wouldn't mislead you BUT I'm also sure that their systems have been installed on RHD with some mods to plumbing.

Also, is that thread relating to NB or NC?

Yeah, maybe the alterations are more than some minor plumbing.
