Boosted Bottom End? 1.6

Hey guys,

Trying to get together a list of parts to build my motor. It will be a turbo application, i already have an IHI 13 from an early legacy.

I have been doing so much research on the net i'm starting to get confused. But basically i'm aiming for a bit over 200hp at the wheels. I figured I should build the bottom end as bullet proof as i can so i don't need to rip the motor out again. Would like to know if there are any suggestions on things I should definitely be doing / avoiding? What parts are worth while keeping? I have read posts saying the 1.6 con-rods are really strong and don't need to be changed, would like to know what everyone thinks?

Oh and does anyone know a good engine builder in sydney that can do all of the machine work??

Cheers

Here's a link to my build thread if anyone is interested:

for 200 horses the stock 1.6 bottom end will be fine.

250 is common on stock bottom.

and im pretty sure the 1.6 has weak con rods and a big rep for that being the weak link.

If you really want to have peace of mind, install a set of M-Tuned rods and supertech pistons. You could also replace oil pump hardware if you were really keen. If you can DIY the cost will be well under $1K.

But as has been said, the stock B6 is OK at the 200-220whp mark.

cheers guys, ill definitly check them out. The car's done 200,000k and isn't the healthiest sounding motor so i'm pretty keen to freshen everything up before strapping the hair dryer on.

I found this on ebay and have been considering it

Wiesco pistons... had trouble with them back when we were racing Yamaha KT100S karts. Not sure if their MX5 pistons are any good. Eagle rods are quality.

Having said that, M-Tuned rods and Supertech pistons will be cheaper and probably just as good...

Looks like some say the weisco pistons are better than the JE pistons, so more than anything i think it comes down to personal preference

This.

1.6 and 1.8 engines both have the rods as the first weak point, and both engines use identical rods, so both are safe to about 250rwhp stock, regardless of the extra 200cc.

The rods are identical. But why not just use M-Tuned rods for like 300 dollars shipped, they are proven to way more power than any factory drivetrain can handle.
and to OP
DONT EVER BASE A TURBO BUILD OFF A TURBO YOU JUST HAPPEN TO HAVE.
Its a small part of the equation and will make your life sooo much harder if you do it that way.
