Latest Turbosmart Boost Tee vs. previous model

Allo all, quick question, has anyone here, or anyone they know, changed from the older boost tee to the new one?
This:

to this:

If so have you/they noticed any significant improvements?
According to Turbosmart, this has a faster reaction time/boost comes on earlier, and an improved "detent" system (I've no idea what that means).
Cheers
Andrew
PS: Yes.... I know an electronic boost controller eg. e-boost2 is the way to go, but can't afford one at the moment.

I have one of this fitted to my SP.
The purpose of fitting this device was not to increase the boost, but rather to ensure I get the factory set 8 pound boost. Mazda replaced the turbo under warranty. But I later found out Mazda fitted a smaller wastegate which reduced the boost to a paltry 5 pounds.
So when I got my engine rebuilt with better internals, David @ MX5 Mania also fitted the Turbosmart Boost Tee, to bring back my boost to the factory specified 8 pounds (apparently I can increase it further, but I just want my SP standard).
It was set and fitted two years ago and I've never had to touch it again since. So in short, it's been very reliable and performs as intended.

Nothing really that wrong with the old Turbosmart.
I know most of the boys over at mt.net are using this, or something like it:
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll ... 011wt_1139They have an excellent rep. You can even make one yourself if you feel up to it (though for $30 I'm not sure why you would bother).

I'm happy with the performance of the older boost tee, I just thought that if the new one gave a noticeable improvement then I'll upgrade. Looks like I won't be.

Has there been any comparisons between the Turbosmart and the Turbotech?

There was one done by one of the import tuning mags here in Oz - the testing was done on a R33 Skyline on a dyno from memory.
The turbotech was considered every bit as good, if not better.

I have the new boost tee.The detent system is just a click indent so you can increase/decrease in regular intervals and makes replicating boost levels easier.
I replaced the HKS EVC in my SE with this because it was easier, more compact and the EVC solenoid/unit was stuffed.

I've used both and for my money the Turbotech is best value. They will get boost as fast as any method. They use a different principle to the Turbosmart Boost Tee. Turbosmart is a bleed. Turbotech is a ball-n-spring arrangement that relies on the boost to lift the ball off a seat before air passes through it to open the wastegate. So best boost response.
Downsides of Turbotech are that they can tend to boost spike a bit and that they are quite touchy to adjust. 1/4 turn will give you an appreciable boost increase. Turbosmart are a bit nicer with their spring loaded detent on the adjustment. And they look nicer. If you like shiny things then you'll like the Turbosmart more.
I've found Turbotech good to about 16psi. Above that you really wanna be looking at an EBC. But at lower boost levels there's nothing wrong with Turbotech. I buy them in boxes of ten because I often use them to tune a car on the dyno - gives quick and easy boost adjustment and take seconds to fit. Once the owner sees the results they wanna stick with the Turbotech.
No reason you couldn't make one yourself, but for the money it's hardly worth it.

Without dyno tuning, is there any way to tell which click is which PSI it is giving you?

Not really. Boost depends on so many things. Type of turbo, WG spring pressure, WG pre-load, etc. etc.
So the only real way is to suck it and see. Most owners will find that once they have boost set approx where they want it that "X clicks = X psi boost" so you can sorta work out for your car. But fit the same controller to a different car and you'll probably get different boost unless it's running everything identical to your car.

Right, i am getting a turbosmart boost tee, so i might have to look into a boost guage as well then...
The car is stock at the moment, i was just going to pump the boost up to the USA / JAP levels for a few more kilowasps....

You will need a guage
It doesnt need to be fitted permanently.
You can run the vacuum line to the guage through the window into a passengers hand and then onsell the guage once you have it set.
write down the required turns or clicks on the boost tee for different settings before you onsell the guage.

Thanks... thats a very efficient idea.
I think ill eventually get a boost gauge, but thats a good way to set it for the mean time..........

Depending on the ECU you use, you may be able to watch it live to a laptop too.
