Supercharger photos - show me your belt!

Postby jerrah » Thu Jul 15, 2010 1:56 pm

I'm still building up my M45 supercharger for my NA6. Most people who go down this route seem to have power steering and such have a belt tensioner that takes this into account.

My NA6 has airconditioning but no power steering. I would really appreciate if owners of supercharged cars could share photos of how their belt tensioner arrangements work/are attached etc. Just looking for some ideas currently as I haven't made a final decision.

I'm tossing up reusing the tensioner arrangement from the aircon but I'm not sure if that will give me enough surface area from the belt on the supercharger or whether the belt might foul on the engine.

Many months down the road I've realising it would have been easier to just bolt on a snail than to build up a compressor from scratch. 8)

Looking forward to seeing what you've done!

After much looking through the forum I think I've found a similar setup to what I need to achieve:

This car appears to still have the AC belt tensioner still fitted, but I can't see the route the belt takes exactly. Surely the tensioner wouldn't work with the belt looped under the pulley as it would pull up?

Have you considered getting a NA PS pump & bracket, remove the impeller blades, fill with oil, & connect the inlet to the outlet pipe? That way you can also use the improved belt tensioners sold by BRP & Track Dog, or the standard JR M45 belt tensioner.

Seems a bit like overkill to fit a power steering pump just to fit the belt tensioner. :)

not really - it's just the pump - nothing else - then the upgraded belt tensioned can be used as it requires the ps pump & its bracket to mount to.

My big budget jackson racing instilation on an NA with BP motor uses a dummy power steering pump for a tensioner. I bought the car all done so I don't know all the details. I know it has 130 rwkw and does Wakefield Park in 1.11.2 ...Patrick

Nice toothed belt! :)

I'll investigate a power steering pump, but I think I'll work out my own tensioner that doesn't require it. I'll post up my solution when I work out what I'm doing...

Jerrah, obviously you're reseaching with a view to adapting & improving your M45 kit, but was your M45 kit for an NA6 with AC but without PS? If not, then the last time I checked you could still buy the parts from JR to turn it into an AC but no PS kit.

Actually I'm adapting a M45 from another car to fit the MX5, just investigating what options are available to me.
