NB8B Turbo Recommendations

Hi all,
I want get FI for my 5 early next year. First I was leaning towards S/C but now more turbo.
I have only been in Perth for about 6 monts and have owned the mx5 for about 1, so I don't know all
the rights places to go to.I prefer not to do anything internal at this stage, so 10 or so PSI will be enough. Can you guys
recommend some places to go to in Perth or close to? I have been looking at Xspeed's online store,
looks like they sell all kinds of turbo packages and installation too. Will it be best
ordering say a AVO kit myself and taking it to a place for fitment or doing it all at one place?
Any help on which kit and good tuner place will be appreciated.

It's not what you want to hear but you're much better off swapping your car for a factory turbo car and starting from that as the base. You'll have far fewer regulatory/insurance hassles and it will be worth more when you're ready to sell. If you do the sums I think you'll find that the cost difference between keeping your car and adding a proper DIY turbo kit and a newer car with pre-built factory kit will be pretty similar.

I think youre right, if I do upgrade it won't be to an mx5,I might as well get a RX7. Are you in Perth?

Pity you werent at the RAC driver training centre this afternoon, I could have shown you examples of different setups.

There is no easy legal way to turbo your NB, most people tend to upgrade to a factory turbo MX-5 then start improving on it.

AVO kit has been tried and tested, it would be one of the most obvious solutions to turbo your NB8B.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

Sorry Okibi but the avo kit isnt that good on the NB8B SVT , The NB8A on the other hand is a different matter


Beside if you want a car already done thats as reliable as a nuclear war head look at my car. more money spent on it than you''l ever considering spending on a car. Bullet proof, drivable and leaves 99% of the exotics wondering which way you went.... 8) :shock: :mrgreen: :shock: 8)

BJ is it just the poxy computer that's the issue with the AVO on the NB8B? or are there other fitment VVT issues?

My bad, I never considered buying an ECU when looking at their kits. :oops:
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

From my own experience the Garrett T28 works marvellously on my NB8A. Have no idea on how it would adapt to a NB8B.

I, would probably agree with the majority, better to buy something that as already had the work done.

Besides turbo and intercooling, you have the cost of tuning which I have spent a small fortune on, cooling, turbo heat and hoses of all different types under the bonnet, tend to go kaput.

You may also add a) turbo timer b) boost gauge c) coolant bypass reroute/oil cooler.

Aftermarket computers are necessary and costly. Finding a good tuner is harder than it sounds.

Make sure if aftermarket computer the tuner doesn't lock the tune, tying you down to being only able to use their service.
Expect less fuel economy, shorter engine life.

Positives that surge when you put the foot down.

Sounds like you've discovered Clubroadster.net :lol:

Should have been at the driver training centre on Monday, there was an MX-5 with quads on it (it won the day). There's a lot of experienced people in the club, get involved it could have you a lot of time and heartache. :mrgreen:

I have to agree with everything above......EXCEPT "shorter engine life" if you do it right in the first place and spending 5 to 10k doesnt cover doing it right your engine will last just as long, admittedly you have to keep a service schedule shorter and followed to the T (kms or time - mines been time as of late)

Yes I most probably have spent alot more than anyone else on doing up my 5 close to 6 figures, keeping it engineered and road worthy, but I know one thing, its reliable, its fast, it stays cool damn cool (44deg day ran medium boost went up 1deg....)

I can access the computer (any laptop can hook up to it and run the tuning program/s)
I have access to my engine builder.
I have done everything mentioned and more

Who ever buys my car will also have the above,and alot more not mentioned here, I know its going to be a sad day when it goes but we have a family now and a family car is used 99.99999% of the time Im behind the wheel now.

What I would tell anyone that wants to do up, turbo charge, supercharge, nuclear charge a 5.... Unless you have bucket loads of money to do the job once and do it properly just buy one thats already done, theyve done the spending sorted the bugs and spent a bit more. Doing up a car is not an investment it is somewhere to put your money and have alot of fun when its done....

Okibi,

I didn't have time to stay long but I was there briefly, had a quick look at some of the cars and watched
about three runs, saw you too, you were about 4th in line.
I did not know of club roadster, I came across the clip on youtube of a mx5 with the fuji kit.
Can you buy those locally? Who fits them? Sorry I do not not have much technical knowledge, very basic, I'm starting my mechanical
apprenticeship next year :lol:

Should have said Hi ! If I was about to have a run i would have been "in the zone", I couldn't afford to muck up any runs and I war praying Pete would screw up at least one of his :lol:

There's a few mechanics locally who can easily install and tune a set of ITB's but not many have played with them on the MX5.

Warwick Gate's MX-5 (which was easily the quickest all day) is running a set of ITBs.

Check out clubroadster, there's some good advice on the different setups there.
