na turbo recommendations..
hey all!
im pretty new to the whole mx5 game so go easy on me if im making no sense
anyway i purchased a pretty neat 89 model na with quite a few bells and whistles a few months ago for a fun weekend car and also some track work. so far i have only entered it into the victorian round of the ATC (australian tarmac challenge....formerly dutton rally). it was a ripper of a weeked and the car performed faultlessly the whole time!!.. but i want some more power now (who dosen't?!)
at the moment it has..
-rebuilt engine with wiseco pistons, new rods ACL race bearings, new crank, reco head.
-AVO stage 2 turbo kit
-miata link ecu
anyway i want to do some work to it and want to know a few things before i get started.
so...
how much will the standard AVO exhaust manifold flow? i was going to make a custom one but it looks like an ok piece of gear and have read they flow pretty well?? the only problem i have with it (if it is good enough to stay)is clearance for a decent 3inc dump pipe. even if i cut away the fire wall lip will there be enough room.
also i am going to weld the internal gate and go external (38mm enough?). how would the cast manifold go with this mod? where would it go? or with both of these things i want to do would it be best to build a custom manifold?
another thing is the ecu.
what are the miata links like as an ecu? where can my tuner get the software for it?
oh last one.. injectors..apparently some wrx ones fit? 420cc ..ish? i cold only find the info in the injector chart floationg around but no one had fit them. wouldn't they be quite a good match and cheap and easy to find?
thanks in advance
cheers

Heya,
Injector chart can be found here http://miataturbo.wikidot.com/fuel-injectors
I just sourced myself some 550cc pnp rx7 injectors via ausrotary forum, worth a look if u decide on the rx injectors.
Ive been told the avo mani is good for over 300hp...

thanks for that.
i swear there is another one with a few others and also the WRX ones i mentioned somewhere?
i initialy thought of the rx7 ones but apparenty the spray pattern ins't too flash. (i also mentioned them to my tuner and he said from previous test they were a crappy spray pattern for anything other than a rotor..)
rx8 ones are meant to be good but are imposible to find and would probably be expensive.
good news on the manifold there. anyone used one with a 3inch dump?

get yourself some denso, or sard injectors.
also be careful when looking at the rating on the injectors, they are not all rated to a standard fuel pressure. increase in fuel pressure can sometimes be the difference between 550cc and 650cc.
ideally the mazda sp log manifold and dump pipe are the best option but the AVO is more than ample.
interesting to see you want to go with an ext. gate, i havent actually seen one on a 5 yet it will be interesting to see how it goes if you do it.
hope i goes well.

You can stick with the Miata link ECU, or you maybe able upgrade the chip with a new one from Flyin' Miata if you have the full replacement ECU rather than a piggy back. You get more robust code, and some extra features.
I just had a look at the Flyin' Miata website and they don't list the upgrade any more, but it may be worth contacting them
www.flyinmiata.com
Or you could go the megasquit plug and play ECU. or AEM, or... lots of choice, depends on the level of experience your tuner has with them.

I've never heard about WRX injectors in a 5' and from what I've been told on the RX injectors, they have a different spray pattern to 'regular' injectors, so my tuner told me to avoid them.
Anyway, here are other plug and play injectors. (props to Blackster for the page)

Its interesting that the list 16Bit has included in this post:

includes some WRX injector sources that arent included in the list that d-mag has (and is the list that ive seen in previous research).

yeah thats the one!! cheers!
i just had a quick look under the hood (first time for ages!) and there is no where near enough room for a decent dump with the avo so when i buy a mig welder i'll be making my own manifold.
the only problem i can see is i will have to keep the turbo on the same angle to keep the oil return at the bottom. its not really a problem but would have been nice to mount it high or low rater than on its side (if that makes sense?!?!)
any good threads/pics on exhaust manifolds around?
thanks so far!

Hi buz 138,
Welcome to the forum!
Just a thought here but exactly how much rear wheel horsepower do want? The reason I ask is that many of us have had a lot of success with cast manifolds and internally gated turbochargers. So the question has to be asked along with what baseline rear wheel power figure do you have now?
On an average, anyone running a B6 (I presume you are running a 1.6 B6) with a AVO cast manifold on 15 psi/1 bar of boost should be averaging around 230-240 rwhp/170rwkw-180rwkw on a Dyno Dynamics Dynamometer. This is taking into consideration all fuel systems, ECU, exhaust, etc, have been done.
Some of us have got over 300rwhp/230 rwkw pushing boost up some more.
So are looking for astronomically high horsepower (i.e. 350rwhp/260rwkw) out of the B6?
Les @ MX5 Shop
P.S. I have a 2.5" exhaust and the old girl put out a little over 300 rwhp.

you have got 260kw at the wheels in a 1.6???? is this with standard intake mani??? what turbo are you using?

I think you read my post incorrectly.
Here are the answers to your questions respectively.
No. The old girl put out 229rwkw/307 rwhp at 20 psi.
Yes.
HKS GT2535.
Brett aka BOYRCR and Terry aka spikey both run external gates. Both done in Perth though.little decks wrote:Interesting to see you want to go with an ext. gate, I have not actually seen one on a 5 yet. It will be interesting to see how it goes if you do it.
Okay back to the OP's topic.

If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

yeah iv'e heard they are quite a good manifold. thanks for some real world figures to go with it!
atm it has 140rwhp at 7psi ...so im looking for 200+
the reason for external gate is better/accurate control, if im doing a custom mani i might as well put one in and the most obvious....an mx5 with a screamer pipe
so the main reason now is room for a decent size dump....any pics?
cheers
