Since turboing my car I have had a bit of a problem with engine heat destroying different hoses on my car. Some of these hoses where even wrapped to prevent heat soak to no avail.
I, have fitted an aftermarket radiator, PWR I think.
One problem may be that car no longer as undertray as it wouldn't fit with install of intercooler.
My question is what are the merits of and what is the cost of
a) turbo oil cooler
b) fitting vents to the bonnet.
c) getting an undertray made to fit, I have heard they work better with a ? splitter.

1st thing I'd try is a modified undertray Ron, you might find that'll solve all your problems in one hit & free up your stimulis money for other goodies

Thanks AJ. I, have the contact details of a guy at rocklea who does race cars and undertrays.

He mentioned something about ? a splitter.

Thing I found strange though is he wouldn't give me a quote.

Turbocharging and heat go hand in hand I'm afraid.

If you're interested in venting your bonnet, read this thread first to know the most effective way to put vents, including under trays.

Spoke to a guy who races cars, non turbo escort with cosworth engine.
He recommended the following.
Ceramic coat dump pipe for about a metre.
Aluminium race heat shield material.
Bonnet scoops towards the rear of the vehicle.
Recommended aluminium undertray.
El cheapo raise the rear of the bonnet with a lifter kit.

If you are talking about the 3 ply aluminium sheeting stuff then that works really well. It's used on pretty much all factory turbo cars these days so that must say something.

Head to Repco and ask for some ACL heat shielding. From memory i paid about $50 for a pack which had enough material to create a shield for the turbo.

But surely by blanketing the turbo, therefore keeping the heat near the turbo, you are lessening the life of the turbo ?

Would it not be better to get the heat away from the engine bay ?

Its called ACL Race series heat shield material. Will contact repco now to see if they have any and cost.

ACL race shield material $90 from Repco 700mm by 290mm wide.

I, know I have seen an mx5 on mx5cartalk site with race shield material fitted but am unable to find it.

If, anyone can point me in the right direction?

Casey's car was the original SP fitted with Russell's heat shield. He had some piccies up on that thread.

In the background you can also see the woven fabric stuff that Mazda used around one of the heater hoses. It seems to do the job OK in protecting the hose.

Given that the bottom is a high pressure are, ie a good place for cold air intakes, I don't think that idea would have the desired affect.

The engine tray does influence the flow of air through the radiator and engine bay, so I would be looking to get it back on.
