hey all just after any info on a low boost setup for nb8a on stock internals.
Does or has anyone run an se ihi turbo on a nb8a?
What boost levels can the standard nb8a internals handle if the car will be tracked? 6psi?
What size injectors would be suitable? What size fuel pump?
Is 2.25inch exhaust ok for 6psi?
What computer would u recommend? Are haltech interceptor ok?

Not that I know of. The factory exhaust manifold is not very good and the IHI turbo has a very limited efficiency range.

Well that is like asking:"How long is a piece of string?". In most circumstances, 6psi is well within acceptable limits and thus should last for awhile on a decent motor with no problems. Some owners have gone up to more boost with no problems as well. However, since we all do not have X-ray vision and are unable to see the inside bore, pistons and rings, there is no guarantee as to the longevity of the motor. Either way, I would start saving for pistons and rods (for the rebuild) as soon as possible.
What size injectors would be suitable?
Depends on your horsepower and thus the associated flow requirements for fuel. 200rwhp would be easy with factory Skyline GTR 444cc injectors. Anywhere over 300rwhp requires something around 550cc and above to be safe.
What size fuel pump?
As above - depends on your requirements. The common internal fuel pump upgrade is the Warlbro 255 which flows 255 litres per hour (lph) @ 6bar. Most commonly used external pump is the Bosch 040 or 044 which flows 102 or 200 lph @ 6.5 bar or 5 bar respectively.
Is 2.25inch exhaust okay for 6psi?
For now, 2.5" is your best bet in my opinion.
What computer would u recommend?
I have said it before and I will say it again - choose your tuner before you choose your computer. Find a tuner in your area that has had success with tuning turbo MX5s, see if you can meet and chat to owners of other MX5s that they have done and finally if the tuner is willing to back up his or her work then go with them.
Is the Haltech interceptor okay?
See above.

Hope this helps you with your decision(s) and remember that the power bug hits hard and then it never ends ...

With the SE Turbo set up fitting a good exhaust and intercooler and air intake it will run at about 9psi...

I had the Inteceptor on my first SE race car and now have the Mania fitted Adaptronic on the red one.

I think the Adaptronic is a much better computer.

The OEM SE 265cc injectors (which i gather are the same 01-05) will happily support the breathing mods (IC, air intake & exhaust) on the SE IHI 130-135rwkw @ 9-10 psi.

With a piggyback, you can push the car 145-150rwkw using the OEM injectors before duty cycle becomes an issue. As this is specific to an SE, I do not know if its applicable to an NB8A.

That depends on how you look at it, if your looking to run larger than 460cc injectors then yes most piggybacks will not do the job.

There has been a number of developments since the first SE interceptor test vehicle, which have been of great benefit.

Travy if your looking for a haltech tuner in sydney who has experience with 5s, feel free to pm me.

Simon Corston has had his complete SE kit for sale for at least 2 or 3 years now.

Think the IHI turbo requires a new turbine wheel but other than that it is all there from memory (unless he has sold it).

PM him - username is Corston.

hmm very interesting.

so from what I can gather, using an SE turbo kit, it will bolt all up in place to the standard Nb8A engine.

And you would need a either a standalone ecu, or piggyback?

if thats the case, wouldnt you be able to use the SE's ECU?

Not sure it would be that easy as the SE ecu might use a different connection because it would have extra inputs.

I asked the same question when Mania did my conversion - but Daniel said that the ECU from the SE was different and would require the entire loom to be taken off the SE and put in my car
Apparently the security system is slightly different as well

Instead we just used a piggy back on the NB8A ECU

Too good to be true huh  (with a budget minded conversion anyway)
