Geez!!! That plumbing is messy. IMO not very professional looking.

I hope they tidy it up when they start selling the kit.

I can see and understand why the plumbing is longer in terms of piping 8)
It's already being sold (see link for NC turbo kit in top post)

the first question that springs to mind is whether it would be compatible with right hand drive cars. the turbo , pipes etc are crammed in there pretty tight and don't seem to leave much room on the exhaust side of the engine bay. i'd be willing to bet that it's LHD only , which is a shame.

looks like a well made kit tho.

BEGi NC system is old news, as far as messy pipping its no different to quality they produce with there other stuff, which is a hit n miss affair.

Prefer the blitz NC setup, hopefully that will be made commercially soon.

iirc, blitz have canned the NC turbo kit before it ever made it to market.

blackster,
Are those images of your own set up that you purchased from BEGi or from some other customers off the big forum, CR or TM?

Customers off TM & M-S, however I have bought some stuff from BEGi with another user from here, after we discovered similar disapointing workmanship & service.

To keep a long story short, wrong size diameter holes in all orifices, fed with lies that lasted for many months.

i gather with that shoddy quality they didn't fix the issue of too much turbo heat near the ABS unit?

blackster,
Thanks for the heads up. 8)
I wonder if anyone else has any other comments about BEGi parts that they've used?

The thing is though, with the great layout the NC has (block stuffed back against the firewall), it already looks quite messy under there. Getting from manifold/turbo to intercooler without drastic part relocations is always going to look pretty messy with the NC.

Longer intake paths aren't best for turbo response either, meaning you generally have to go larger. Not saying it's a futile path, far from it, but on the face of it, the Cosworth option, and the Cosworth name, certainly make the Cosworth supercharger look like the better option.

Still somewhat surprising that the NC does not have the host of forced induction options you expect from the Japanese houses. But i think this speaks partly for the difficulty of working with that layout, and partly to the clientèle who are buying this car (and preferring not to spend any more on it).

i agree entirely, and on that point i actually think the Begi kit looks very well thought out, and well executed. Given the constraints they had to work with I reckon they have done a stellar job (quality control suspicions notwithstanding, altho i have heard they have improved on that front somewhat in recent years)

Yep. I'm thinking most of the Jap tuning houses have put it in the "too hard basket" .

not so sure on that one. In the Australian, UK and US market, sure, the clientèle are probably more likely to want to leave the car bog stock standard but i reckon the Jap market would still have plenty of gearheads looking to tinker with their NC. They are so cheap over there, thus the Japs tend to turn their cars over a lot more and not worry about resale value so much. IMHO of course .

Anyway, great post Thunderbird. Cheers.

All the opinions here are humble! :D

That is spot on, what you are saying. And a flick through the more recent Hyper Rev mags illustrates that there is aftermarket support for the NC, and plenty of owners modding their NC's considerably, but there is a glass ceiling when it comes to the engine bay. You could be right - it's as if the tuning houses have simply put it in the 'too hard' basket.

I'm thinking the other factor might be that the aftermarket is still SO strong for the NA and NB in Japan, that in comparison they are making more sales for their R&D dollar to NA and NB owners.

I think the biggest things to think about are.....

The reason that there hasnt been many kits is the problems with engine management and no-one wanting to try and develope solutions. And also the fact that just about every NC mx5 is still under warranty.

Now that the "sniper tune" module is out there will be LOADS of options coming out.
There is loads of room in the engine bay.its not very well set out. If youre gonna fit a turbo kit then it isnt hard to relocate the battery and various coolant reservoirs.and the abs unit can easily be sheilded with ceramic sheet from repco or supercheap.

Begi have been promising that they have been developing the kit since 2006 and have been telling everyone that its "just around the corner" And yet the build pics of the prototype only started around a month ago!

SO WHAT THE HELL HAVE THEY BEEN DOING FOR THE LAST TWO YEARS!
DID IT REALLY TAKE TWO YEARS OF STARING AT THE ENGINE BAY BEFORE THEY FABBED UP A PROTOTYPE?

Their metal working skills are pretty piss poor. It looks like I made it...
