Going back to the only real question...... it appears the answer is 'no'. Thus what they're offering is nothing unique.

Don't know where you're getting that from but it's not grey at all. Insurance is incredibly black and white; if it's illegal, your insurance is void. No further questions asked.

not sure where you are getting that from either, as i'm pretty sure that they would have to prove that the illegal modifications caused, or at least contributed to the accident.

Yes. Agreed. Initially I thought it was a black and white issue too but my conversation with the shannons rep prove otherwise. So it seems that you can have a turbine engine strap to your car but if you can prove that the turbine did not contribute to the accident than insurance will cover you. The issue is more that a lot of people are not prepared to take that risk.

Bit over a year ago when I spoke to Shannons they said the car had to be 'legal' in the state or territory in which it's registered. But when I spoke to Shannons last month there was more flexibility, however as you say you're not covered if they assess the modification contributed to the accident.

Would be interesting to see what "black and white" guidelines or case studies they use to establish that.

From the PDS:

"We do not insure any accessory or modiication that is not legal."

Does that mean if you rear end someone with a turbocharged MX5 they will pay out the other party and repair your front end damage just sans turbo / intercooler?

As I understand it they will pay out to fix the other car but can then persue you through the courts to get the money back from you.

Not sure what happens to your own car, I assume you are on your own.

Indeed, the detail is all important & to my knowledge, while they'll give the verbal advice they've given, it's not given in writing, & so involves a leap of faith on the part of the insured.

If they decide that the mod contributed to the accident you will find yourself paying for the other car as well because you increased the risk without notifying them. Just like if you crashed and were over 0.05. Your insurer will hang you out there and you will have to pay for both cars.
With two laps to go then the action will begin, unless this is the action, which it is.

^^ Only if you are at fault...

You can be completely blotto, and someone hits you (I.e. you are not at fault) your insurance should still cover you... You'll still get reamed by the police though
