That would be good at a future event.

BARMY was indeed catching Russell on both straights. Of course, Russell would then pull away again on the twisty bits. The extra power adds up to a potential extra 20-30kmph on the straights by the time we reach the previous braking points. Of course, as I discovered on lap 2  , trying to slow down from the higher speeds at the same braking point with the same brakes doesn't work as the existing pads just overheat and cease to stop the car. The pads I'd ordered from Brakes Direct/QFM should have been here in time, but weren't, but that's another BARMY supplier story  .

So I had to start braking further back where the car is only about 15kms faster. The present pad material still overheats at different rates either side of the car, making it dart from side to side at 205kmph, which is quite exciting. At least at turn one the darting was mainly to the left, which is good, since it's a left turn. With hindsight the solution would have been to start braking even earlier so the car wasn't getting upset going into the corner so could be dríven quicker around the corner but I confess to not being a professional racing driver, who would have thought of that at the time.

So, hopefully 1440+ pads instead of 1000+ by the next event. Maybe also some aero assistance for the undersized brake ducting.

Everything else worked perfectly, which is a first for BARMY. No misfires, no smoke, no fluid losses, no overheating, normal idle coming in after a session. Lug nuts needed regular tightening (this was the first time I've had a proper torque wrench to check them. I wonder how often I've run with loose nuts in the past  ). Power steering belt fell off, which introduced me to the whole of the apron at Dandenong Road. My fault as it was a new belt and I didn't re-tension it after the drive down from Newcastle. Lesson learned, spares now in the toolbox and I know how to change one now and what tools I need. Thanks to everyone who loaned tools and expertise.

On-track info in the post four above /\ /\

Driving home report:

1100+kms from Newcastle to Mornington.

Because of the need to be at Sandown for 7.30 on Saturday, and because more time was taken up by Dann wanting to do further triple checks before releasing the car, including an interesting   drive around his nearby hillclimb circuits, the trip down wasn't as fun as originally planned as it was all freeway in straight lines in the dark at 110 and 100kmph. The car was flawless and even quite good on fuel, which says a lot for the tune.

Even with the coilovers on softest and only 26psi in the tyres, NT01s are even horrider on the road than R888s, which are worse than RS3s, which are waaay worse than a proper road tyre. Yes, I need a set of wheels with road tyres. You know the 3" exhaust is louder than the previous 2.5" but you can't tell exactly how much, because the Nittos are sooooo loud.

To avoid the failures others have reported, I opted for a clutch to handle even more power than BARMY now has. It certainly seems to handle the power and is fine in normal use once you've got your head around what seems like a double engagement but was borderline unpleasant in a 45 minute crawl where there'd been an accident going past Melbourne.

On the road everything else about the car is the same as an SE with sorted suspension and the removal of the bog and other flaws Mazda built into the OEM tune. This is because Dann also mended or improved many things other than just the motor. The surprises come from it still being as docile, tractable and driveable as any Mazda 3 or similar until you press the loud pedal, when it gets louder and goes way fasterer than any road car should unless it's red (sorry, "Rosso, with Crema leather and Rosso piping, sir?") and decorated with prancing horses.

Good work, NitroDann.

Part of the Good Thing about track days is getting rid of the speed one might otherwise use on the road and get pinged for. It mostly works for me. Of course there are other reasons to get a quick car on the track, but each to their own.

Has used no oil in the last 3,000kms by the way, including Sandown yesterday and PI a few weeks ago. And nothing in the catch can. No oil, zilch, nada, not a sausage, bugger oil. Due for a change now.

Testament to the second engine rebuild, by TopTorque in Vermont, Vic and, I imagine, to Dann resisting the temptation to wring everything out of the tune and the turbo.

Last time I bought some I got5 200L of the good stuff delivered for $500.00. This is equivalent to 116 octane and worth more than 25rwkw. Down side is you won't get very far on this stuff :D :D :D

Hmm. Mine was using 55L per 100kms on the track yesterday. Further proof of a decent tune and a good fuel delivery system that it can be made to use that much on the track and as little as under 9L on the road. Pretty sure when I topped up today it was about $1.20 a litre, so less than $2 per lap. So who cares?

BARMY still has 200rwkw on 98 with a max of 12psi but I'll always put E85 in unless only 98 is available as 244rwkw with E85 is pretty, well, addictive.

For those considering a similar conversion be aware that you no longer need to think about changing your diff ratio from the very high standard SE one (3.6 I think) as BARMY now gets into 6th very happily on both the straights at Sandown yesterday and will use it for longer when the brakes are sorted.
