It helps of course to have a car and ECU that your mechanic is familiar with. And an ECU that's capable (Adaptronic's need not apply!).
I just wish Dann wasn't a day's drive away!

Aw, what, you think you're too good for hydrolock, throttle hesitation, and and idle that drops to almost stalling level every time the fans come on?

How long is a piece of string? Starting from scratch with an MS-3 pro with no knowledge at all, it took me a couple of hours to get it reasonably driveable. Then it gets interesting, there are so many little things to learn along the way, heaps of fun and 3 years later very happy with it. But it took forever to fine tune those little things. Still hasn't been on a dyno but oneday! Trouble is who to trust with a rotrex mx-5 with MS3 in Brisbane. I enjoyed the process though. But I like tinkering with sh!t like that.

That's why a good tuner is worth is asking price, and why it's important to use an ECU the tuner is familiar with. We're not paying the tuner just for the time his arse is in our seat, we're paying for all the experience he's gained in all the seats he's sat in!

But how do you find a "good tuner".
Is a good tuner the one who charges the most or the one who knows his/her craft like the back of the hand and gets it right quickly.
Is a good tuner the one that spends 2 hours getting it right or the one who spends 5 hours getting it right.
On an hourly basis they both charge $200, but one is $400 for the tune, the other $1000, or if both charge $1000, one makes $500 an hour and the other $200 an hour.
Do you go with the dearer one believing that the dearer it is, the better it is?
I guess personal recommendation, not cost is the best advice.

Exactly the point I and others were making. U could pay top $ to the top tuner and get a poor tune. And vice versa.

Maybe. But Dan is a 5 day round trip worth a grand in accomodation, half a grand in fuel and the rest.

I've dríven to Dann from Brisbane a couple of times, left the car with him and flown home, then reversed the trip when the car was ready. Usually do one day's accom on the way home as I don't leave Newcastle until late. Cheaper than what you've summarised, but still an added expense. I wish there was someone local I could find.

I've had a few people recommend Matt Spry at PITS on the Gold Coast, Molendinar - which is sort of local for you.
I haven't used him yet but I did have a chat. Main issue for you would be that he wasn't all that keen on doing Megasquirt, but his experience on MS may have been with older versions. His preferences seemed to be Motec, Haltech or Link.

I believe he's the guy who tuned Daffy's car (haltech), I've considered reaching out to him but we'll see. I think they're all a little gun shy of Megasquirt, not only because of dodgy early units, but their reputations are built on their speciality and straying from that can lead to disappointed customers and tarnished reputations.

Yes I did. A friend of my sons who has a Dyno and is very familiar with Link and ViPec as well as many other ECU's. He had tuned his MA70 with JZ1 on several occasions with great success. No drama's. The SE was on the Dyno for about 3.5 hours and managed a very respectable 170wKw at the wheels. The 0.8 spring kept the boost below what I wanted with the BOV fully open by 14 lb. I will try it out on the track to see how it goes, but around the street and on East Link it drove very well indeed.
The option is to go back for a quick touch up with a 1bar BOV spring for about 15-18lb boost to get to a safe level before any engine re-build. Cihan sat in the car uninterrupted all that time and smiled at the end saying "You'l notice a big difference. You'l like this".
