I don't recall the thread but I'm sure I'd have been a doubter for reasons already stated here...
Doing the sums, even based on your figures and assuming rock bottom prices on all parts I can't see it being well under $1500, the number you mention doesn't account for consumables or time, so again it's unrealistic for the average punter. As I said before, it seems the only way the average punter could do it is to have you do it for them.
At the end of the day it's a reasonable package, but what most people are arguing costs $5k or $10k is something very different to this.
