On the hunt for a reliable fabricator on Brisbane northside

Postby cookie » Tue Jan 03, 2017 8:10 am

Since I am clearly banned from sharing my past experience with the previous fabricator, on the hunt for someone who doesn't have an ego and instead channels that energy into delivering cars on time without issue. Recommendations of places to avoid also appreciated (but more importantly, why)

At this stage it looks like I'll spend months perfecting my TIG skills and join the instafame and get it done myself.

What do you want done and budget?

It is no secret that I would suggest GT Auto Garage and MR Tuning since Automotive Plus is only doing custom fab work by mutual agreement.

I'll use the guy at Hervey bay for all tuning duties. Close mates have had only excellent results and he's an adaptronic guru. He also has a full shop so fixing broken stuff is also easy and cost effective. In terms of GT auto, they're certainly the closest/easiest but the final result from my them for my mate was very $. I'll give them a buzz and see when they reopen.

Drove past plus, all shut up!
Visited Rob Bliss and gave some rough but good pricing. Said he'd need 3 days notice then it'd be done within 3 days from then.

Also saw and awaiting a quote from "Macs Mufflers". Both young guys interested in taking something a bit different to the normal commodore or Beema.

Both shops have good reputations, evidenced by the 500k-1m worth of cars in/outside of each shop.

Swayed towards the 2nd option only because it's a written quote, seemed stoked to see me and responded to my message last night when I messaged their FB page. Also it's 3 minutes drive from my place.

Still happy to continue with any more suggestions, this is the motivation I needed to get this car done...finally!

Keen to see where you end up/how happy you are with the result - got some ideas of my own kicking around I'd like a shop to have a crack at.
Because reasons.

My mid pipe had rusted out along the seam in the pipe, had it replaced at Albion Muffler Shop on Burrows St.
I outlined what I wanted and we agreed on a price, they then routed it lower than the original and put the new section in with the seam facing down again when I asked them not to avoid a repeat of the first failure. They were not going to do a thing to correct the work without more cash.
So I cut my losses and lived with it until one good pothole caught the low section and tore the flange clean out of the headers at the cat.

I am very happy with the work Mac's Mufflers at Brendale did for me.
They are genuinely interested in your car and what you want to achieve from their work. I wasn't spending a ton of money or after any ridiculously complicated fabrication work; just fixing the last bodged repair, tucking the midpipe as high as possible around the diff and sub-frame as well as re-welding the flange and fitting a flex joint it the headers.
They took the time and did everything right. Clearance is tight but the hangers are placed well so nothing ever makes contact.

When I went to pick up the price didn't change and the guys were keen to show off some of the other things they were working on. There was an amazing twin turbo V8 commodore on the hoist that had some very creative pipework for the intercooler and a very neat sectional exhaust that made working on the engine actually achievable.

Would recommend 7/5
