Oil feed from back of head?

Oil feed from back of head?

Is there a reason why people don't use the oil feed on the back of the exhaust cam? Seems like a convenient location to supply oil to the turbo.

Most don't use it cause most use flexible hoses and you'd need a couple of extra fittings to route it nicely compared to the block one.

It works fine though - I've heard people complain about potential radiant heat off the manifold, but never actually seen a problem.

A hard line like Danns seems a simple and effective solution.

What size is that outlet at the back of the head there?

Would it be a good place to stick an oil temp sensor?

Also using the port in the back of the head, it seems to work for the SP so thats good enough for me. I am using the one at the back of the inlet cam as I have the CAS in the way on the exhaust side. Just running a teflon braided -4 line. I have a straight 1/8 BSPT x 7/16 JIC adapter in the back of the head to the 90deg end of the line so it fits pretty neat.

The thread in the head is 1/8 JIS which is interchangeable with 1/8 BSPT AKA "1/8 gas". Most gauge senders use NPT thread which is slightly different pitch and diameter so I would not recommend using it for a gauge sender if it has NPT thread.

ok thanks. i actually just tried fitting the oil temp sensor into that hole tonight, on my spare motor. The hole was not deep enough for the sensor anyway, let alone having a different thread!

oh well, guess i'll have to get that oil filter sandwich plate after all. good excuse to get a filter relocation kit!

I put the oil temp sensor in the sump so it get the temp of the oil as it goes into the pickup. You can get adapters for the sump plug so you dont need to tap a hole, in my case it was only talking to the ecu so I found a bosch sensor which has the same thread as the sump plug, now that is my sump plug :wink:

PS my turbo is ball bearing like the SP so requires very little oil. Due to the restrictor in the block the point on the head only sees around 12psi at idle to around 20psi when block is at 60psi odd (on my head anyways) so the flow will not be high, I think it would be fine for a journal bearing turbo but might be worth researching a little first if that is what you are running.

oil temp sensor in the sump plug? what a great idea, i have never seen that. i'll have to get an adaptor.

My turbo is ball bearing, the oil feed runs from a T piece on the oil pressure sensor, so it should be fine.

Does anyone know what fittings are needed to tap into this oil feed at the back of the exhaust cam?

Would it be the same fitting (or thread size) as the oil pressure sensor on the intake size?

Pretty sure it was 1/8 BSPT from memory, being Japanese it should be and I think it is also the same as the one for the oil pressure sensor. I just got a -4AN to BSPT adapter from speedflow. Be sure to use an oil resistant sealant on the thread, most loctite thread locking compounds will do the job well.

Thanks for the answer Tim, I have a -3AN Speedflow line lying around that should do the trick. I'm not sure if its long enough as its quite short, about 30 cm from memory. If I'm not mistaken I think its possible to just buy the steel braided line and put the existing fittings on the end of it.

I happen to have seen an SP last weekend and took a pic of how its set up for reference.

I have bought complete crimped "Teflon brake hose" from ebay before for a reasonable price too. Just need to measure up and order the right length. The cost is a fraction of what many of the rip-off merchants here charge.
