Need an opinion on Intakes!

Postby D.A.M » Sun May 26, 2013 11:20 pm

Not too sure if this is the correct area for air intakes, BUT i need an opinion between:

1) The mx5mania cold air intake http://www.mx5mania.com.au/product630.htm for $285 w/ the enlarged system for an additional $370 without installation.

or

2) just a standard pod filter for a lot less and using custom pipes for enlarging the system for a far cheaper price.

My na6 is stock except for a high flow exhaust system and basically i would like as much extra power for the best price while im studying and short on cash and until i can either supercharge/turbocharge the engine.

Thank you legends!

Neither will get you much power. An open pod filter sitting right above the exhaust manifold isn't the best idea. I don't believe the piping is really a restriction at all, from memory the AFM is the biggest restriction on the intake. The Mania intake means you drill a hole in the car, which will look a bit silly once you go forced induction and aren't using it anymore.

They both sound good though.

If you're going FI down the line, why not save up a bit more and buy a Megasquirt and associated bits? It will probably get you a decent power increase in the meantime (better than an intake), plus it's one less thing you have to worry about when you get some boost. AND it means you can delete the AFM which is the biggest intake restriction.

It will be routed completely differently, because your air will be going:
Filter -> supercharger/turbo -> probably intercooler -> throttle body (with something in there to measure flow) rather than:
Filter -> air flow meter (AFM) -> throttle body.

So just about anything you make now in terms of intake will have to be completely changed when you add forced induction.

If you ask three different people, you'll get five different opinions. Have a look at various discussions on this forum and others to get some idea. This forum does happen to have some very helpful contributors who use Megasquirts. Gslender even builds them to order.
