So im currently doing some research on running a mild DIY turbo kit, and have been spending days at a time on the forums haha!

Im looking at either an ebay manifold or cannibalizing a stock 01 header into a custom manifold, not sure just yet. Looking at a used T25 type charger with internal wastegate at 8psi.Will definitely intercool so maybe i wil see 6-7pi boost after losses (is this reasonable?). 2.5 from dump back ect ect

The engine management is where i get out of my depth and id rather have the satisfaction/low cost of a put it together system than off the shelf...

The big question is how much boost can i run with stock injectors and ECU, is 6-7psi reasonable????? Im not looking for huge power, not really sure what to expect from 6-7psi. Should i run a boost controller like a tee piece if i already have the wastegate to fine tune or is this not required?

MONITORING: To keep an eye on how lean i run i was thinking to get a bosch wideband 02 sensor, and Wideband Fuel Mixture Controller Kit from jaycar and hook that the jaycar display kit (or can i hook it upto a guage cup style meter from supercheap?) Sound good/is this vital??? Or can i just use the Smart Fuel Mixture Display for Fuel injected Cars kit from jaycar with led display??

FUEL: i was thinking either an active fuel pressure reg (do these just have a line to the intake and sense the pressure and up the fuel pressure accordingly to increase injector flow rate?). Or doing the jaycar hand controller route with a Voltage Modifier Kit to get the right A/F. Either by butt dyno or real dyno.

But i have read about NB compatibility problems on the forum. I have a 2001 NB8B, (can you shed any light on this, not really sure as to the pros/cons of the choice here other than greater control/monitoring doing the jaycar route).

TIMING: This is what is said about the ignition system "This is Silicon Chip's most advanced and versatile ignition system yet and can be used on both two & four stroke engines. The system can be used simply to intercept and modify the factory ignition timing or turned into a stand alone ignition system with remapped timing, electronic coil control and anti-knock sensing. The unit will trigger from a range of sources including points, Hall effect sensors, optical sensors, or the 5 volt signal from the car's ECU. Timing can be mapped against engine load and RPM and adjusted in step as small as 0.5°. Requires KC5386 and WC7502 with all pins connected."

Have you had experience with this? It says its got 'optional knock sensing and correcting" whatever optional means. If its not compatible with the NB im not sure what to do timing wise (its stock at 10.5deg atm). The other thing i was thinking is i could hook this upto a ignition coil kit and run an extra injector into the intake manifold and then would not have to worry about the pressure reg or the voltage modifier kit. That way it would drive stock and come alive under boost and keep fuel and timing all in the one unit. But i really am out of my comfort zone here.


Any light that you could shed would be really appreciated. Hopefully i can learn a bit from your experience. As i said not looking to get huge power, doing this as more of a project of interest, im a 4th year mech engineer and would love to do a fully diy turbo from scratch. But id rather not reinvent the wheel either.

I've seen good results from Haltech Interceptors, but I'd have a chat to MX-5 Plus about their HKS piggyback setup.

I run an Adaptronic but it took a lot of stuffing it around to get it "daily drive" friendly.

The NB8B & NB8C were fitted with VVT which reduces engine management options.

Sounds like it's fitted for, but not with, hence you pay for the option.
