Large number of SEs up for sale right now?

Postby Lokiel » Tue Mar 02, 2010 2:28 pm

I remember when I was hunting around for an SE (Dec-Mar 2009) there was usually only 2 or 3 at most available. On carsales.com.au right now there are 24 up for sale - even the rare 2005 black version.

Now's definitely the time to be buying one if you're thinking of it - and no, mine's DEFINITELY NOT FOR SALE!

So why the large number up for sale at the moment?

I was thinking the same thing. There are 3 pages worth on carsales, you couldn't give them away.
Is it the extended warranties or extended leases ending (I'm thinking those are usually 3 or 5 years)?

Yeah, my SE just turned 5 so is out of extended warranty. I've considered selling/upgrading but it's a great car.

There's definitely a spike in the proportion of 2004 MX-5s up for sale at the moment. Typically, about 2-3% of the total number of MX-5s sold in any single year are currently listed for sale on carsales (assuming the listed year for the used cars matches the year in which they were sold - close enough for this purpose). In comparison, 6% of all MX-5s that were sold in 2004 are currently for sale on carsales! And about two thirds of them are SEs. Interestingly, only 1.6-1.7% of MX-5s sold in 2002 and 2003 are currently for sale on carsales.

I guess there's a message for both buyers and sellers of recent model MX-5s. If you're selling, then it's probably better to keep the car for 6-7 years rather than sell after 5 years. If you're buying, then you should have plenty of 5 year old MX-5s to choose from, and you could drive a hard bargain.

Just throwing out ideas here, but maybe its something to do with the GFC.

SE drivers with a 4 year lease would have reached the end of their lease around late 2008, early 2009 (ie. when consumer sentiment was at its lowest). Rather than trade it in on a new car and commit to another lease (and id imagine due to the glut of unsold new cars at the time, trade in values were low), maybe they just paid the balloon payment and kept hold of their SE until the economy picked up.

Wun is waiting for Lightyear to finish a full carbon body first before committing.

That could constitute a carbon-based life form, especially with SP running gear!

Is there any way of finding out what production number my SE is? They have a list on the Mazdaspeed forum but only for US cars.

Yeah, someone mentioned something recently about their car's birthday - I believe you can just email Mazda Aust - Clubman owners &/ or buyers often do to verify if the car is a Clubman: <CustomerServiceEnq@mazda.com.au>. Usually 24 or less hours response, except on weekends.
