not sure if this is the right area for this topic, if not i apologize
does anybody know if installing an avo turbo kit on an mx5 will have to be engineered to be road legal in south australia
i plan to replace the ecu completely

Maybe ask & lookup threads by Bark. He's the only one so far in SA whos gotten a turbo conversion MX5 legally registered.

But then again, SA is 'The Plate Swap State' 8)

Correction, no it will not need to be engineered! So much mis information on these forums. You will need to fill in an application to modify a motor vehcile at regency park, they will tell you what needs to be changed in order to get passed. You need to fit brakes from the factory turbo editions and if you use a standard se computer you will not need to do emissions testing. If you use an aftermarket computer you will need to pass their emissions testing as Bark did. No engineer consulting necesary :D I will be doing this later this year and have researched it thourghly.

Nothing will need to be engineered. However you will be required to submit a form to modify as arextwo mentions and more than likely it will state that an emissions test will be required amongst other things such as larger brakes (if required), sealed ECU, etc...

The only time you will not be required to do an emissions test is if you transplant an already turbo'd engine into your existing vehicle and that this engine is factory standard and uses the factory ecu.

From memory AVO can provide an emissions read out which states to pass the relevant emissions however it is not accepted by Regency as it wasn't done on an approved/certified IM240 machine.

If you do need an emissions test it is $495 plus gst each test and to get an emission tune done be prepared to pay around +$1k mark pending on ECU.

Also there are now 2 legal aftermarket turbo MX5's running around in SA!

Whats the go with the sealed ecu? I know *someones* is no longer set to emissions legal settings now that they passed the test :lol:

They stipulate for the ECU to be sealed so that it cannot be altered later... However I replied with that isn't reasonable as a) what if I wanted to sell my ECU and b) what if I need to tune it to fix something? With these two responses they agreed that having the ECU sealed wouldn't be logical in my instance.

How big are you going to go with brakes?

Hi all, im looking at going legit when i get my turbo i have been looking at how to ( in tasmania ) i require a vehicle spec sheet just listing the current specs of my '90 NA. did you need to provide one or can anyone suggest a good place to find one? ive googled but had no luck.

I guess I'm looking for some SE brakes, but I don't know if they got better brakes than other NB8B's or not. I could go the Wilwood kit from the US but I don't know if Regency would balk at those as they aren't factory Mazda parts

Oni, have you searched this forum? I'm sure (somewhere) I saw something similar to what you are looking for. If not try your local road transport authority in Tasmania as they would have one.

Adam, from memory I think the discs are slightly larger in diameter and the pads. But I reckon the calipers and fingers were the same dimensions as the NB8's... Can anyone confirm this? Maybe try a post in the braking section. If you're keen on wilwoods put that on your application to modify and see what Regency come back with. Just make sure you state the disc/rotor size and you should be ok.
