cheapest fuel/ignition solution
Hi all,
I have just purchased all the components of SE turbo (manifold, turbo, all the piping minus intercooler), and i am thinking about putting it in my nb8a. just want to run low boost (probably around 5-6 psi) initially..
my question is, what would be the cheapest option for the fuel/ignition control for this sort of boost levels? I was thinking about the jaycar dfa but it does not control timing.
Would i need to control timing for that sort of boost levels, or could i get away with just adjusting the fuel?

there is a new timing / ignition kit from jaycar, which uses the same hand controller as the dfa.

i have no experience with it tho, it's fairly new and i'm not aware of anyone using it in an mx5 yet.
i used the dfa on my low boost turbo and it was a great little unit. it had 120rwkw and the dfa worked great at that power level and i'm sure it could've handled more. if you combined the dfa, ignition kit and hand controller it's pretty cheap, about $250
weird thing is tho, i can't find the dfa on the jaycar website anymore. hope it hasn't been discontinued.... even if it has i'm sure there'd still be units in stock you might just need to ring around a few stores.
i'm sure there'll be others that advise you to forget about piggybacks and go for a standalone. It's all good advice, but the dfa worked fine for me.

oh and regarding whether you "need" to control timing. well no, you don't. you can just retard it a bit (if you can even do that on an nb8a, i'm not sure). however, it won't be as nice to drive. that's what i found. i would suggest you go to the extra effort and control timing, it'll be a much nicer set up in the end.

I dont think you can use 'band aid' controllers (Bipes, MSD etc) to adjust ignition timing in NB's, but i could be completely wrong. Although i think FM sell an adjustable timing wheel that can be used to retard timing on NB's.
Another thing to consider when running a turbo with the stock ECU is that you get a big lean spot when the ecu switches from closed to open loop. To solve this you'd need to look at getting an O2 signal modifier as well.

Hi,
I have an HKS F-con mini Plus that originally came with and HKS turbo kit I fitted to my NB8a a few years ago. The serial numbers on the back are NB8C & FCMP0006. I am not sure if this is the sort of think you require but it ran my car fine up to around 8 pounds I think I ran.

I was going to list a few parts for sale in the next couple of weeks but if you are interested. Apparently it can increase fue to the stock ingectors by up tp 16% and advance and retard timing up to 4deg.
I also have a link piggy back computer that they use on the AVO systems which I think gives a little more scope for further upgrades.

That's only if you take the wastegate line from the intake manifold. Generally you'll lose about 1.5-2 psi through the intercooler and plumbing so taking the WG feed from the out let of the turbo will yeild that 5-6psi boost target.
