So guys, after swapping out the OEM intake on my mates euro today I want to make one for the NC aswell.

The main difference between the euro and the NC is that the MAF sensor on the NC is connected to the OEM box lid. So what I was thinking was get a silicone/steel bit of piping and then maybe drill out a new hole for the MAF sensor and then use self tapping screws to screw the sensor back into the silicone/steel.

What I do not know is would the screws stay in the silicone?


What's everyone's opinion on this?

and I dont want to get the MazdaSpeed intake as I am very short on cash and plus DIY makes it feel like the car is more 'yours'

any suggestions guys?

the screws would probably be OK for a while but not really what I would want to use long term, but screw some into some silicone and see what you think?
I would ideally, get some steel piping and make up a suitable mounting bracket on the steel pipe and clamp the silicone piping to either end of the steel piping.

But thats just me

Just an idea, might be better to save up for a brand name CAI..I dont know how handy you are at bending metal/fabricating and whatnot but generally homemade custom CAI's tend to look at home in Commondores, not fine machines such as ours.

However! If you are able to fabricate it nicely with stainless steel or some such, i'd also fabricate a mounting plate for the sensor so you don't have a dodgy 'stuck on with silicone' look to an otherwise nice pipe.

I ended up ordering a part from amazon that already has the mounting bracket and all

Saved me alot of work, now just waiting for it to arrive


Is there really that much of a difference between brand name intakes and DIY ones? After all they are just metal pipes...

Of course not. With homemade at least you can choose how loud it is, what brand filter etc.

But yes a quality filter, a bracket and cone style enclosure shouldnt cost a hell of a lot more than 100 or 150.
