Re: FAQ: Clubman
Ken, Clubman VINs are random. The Clubman sticker was used across the board, but the Bilstein sticker wasn't. All NA & NB MX5s got a vehicle information sticker on the driver side door jam (so on the body proper not the door) - it's the details on that sticker that differ. Sometimes this sticker isn't present or is visible. Re confirmation or otherwise as a Clubman ring or email Mazda Australia on 1800 034 411 or <CustomerServiceEnq@mazda.com.au> with the VIN requesting verification.

Re: FAQ: Clubman
Being a Clubman adds zero value to a car. All the special features are not that special anymore (Bilsteins worn out, bracing - easily added).
I own one and I didn't pay a cent premium for it.

Re: FAQ: Clubman
Thanks for your post Bruce as it provides an opportunity to remind forumites of the known differences between the NA8 & NA8 Clubman, ie TorSen diff, Bilstein dampers, thicker front anti-roll bar, 1993 LE tie rod ends, Clubman sticker on bootlid, & hollow spoke or semi-hollow spoke NA8 wheels on some.
Ref TorSen, a number of NA & NB owners seem keen to retro-fit them.
Ref the Bilsteins, advice from Heasmans, the NSW Bilstein distributor & specialist is that Bilstein allows for 5% wear in their product for every 100k kms: viewtopic.php?f=44&t=55639&p=701623&hilit=5#p701623
Jonosx from Heasmans has similarly indicated that they'll be close to fully effective even after many kms as long as they're not leaking: viewtopic.php?f=30&t=48651&p=611593#p611593
Ref thicker front anti-roll bar, a modest upgrade, but part of the package. Indeed, the US R Package (the Clubman equivalent) can be emulated by retro-fitting the slightly thicker ADM NA6 (except for the 1993 LE) rear anti-roll bar.
Ref 1993 LE tie rod ends, these improve the steering feedback on any lowered NA or NB, which the Bilsteins achieve, & are retro-fitted to other NAs & NBs.
Ref hollow spoke wheels, second lightest wheel behind the BBS of the same size offered from the factory.
Ref Clubman sticker, must be worth at least $100 as Lou has one for sale at the moment.
Redbook disagrees with you, & shows Clubmans to be worth more.
I guess if you think a Clubman isn't more valuable, then an MX5 LE isn't either. But of course it depends on what a buyer wants, ie a low volume desirable variant (Clubman, LE, SP or SE), a low volume desirable colour (Malibu Gold), originality, low kms, service history, etc.
Btw, you may not have paid a cent premium for your Clubman, but you did pay a premium for it's SR20DET conversion etc, which eclipes anything that might be paid for it being also being a Clubman - which retains a TorSen diff, & possibly its thicker front anti-roll bar & sticker.

Redbook usually disagrees with the market. In this, the information age, where we all have access to prices all over the world, Redbook is losing its value. Carsales is a much better Redbook than Redbook.

Re: FAQ: Clubman
Redbook only provides a rough guide & definitely has a number of limitations, but for the sake of providing an example in this instance it's something we can point to. My understanding is Redbook values were/are based on buyer declared purchase data from Vicroads etc. Of course, many buyers will adjust this figure as stamp duty is calculated on it, so it's not perfect, but gives a localised starting point. Glass' Guide would be useful, but many of us don't have access to a current version of it. Agree, Carsales is also very useful, especially to gauge the overall market in terms of a particular vehicle, but it's highly aspirationally in terms of it reflecting asking prices, & for variants it can be problematic as some sellers list their vehicles incorrectly.

Re: FAQ: Clubman
Good to know Ken - contacted Mazda Aust re the NA8 advertised as a Clubman, & they advised the VIN provided in the pics attached to the ad wasn't from a Clubman.

Re: FAQ: Clubman
i guess it is not the value that the car has but the fact that it was part of a limited number and its history. How ever look at the VW Kombi, back in the late 80's they were 500 to 2000 now they are both 20 times that. Time does funny things to cars?
The faster i go the longer it takes to get there

Redbook usually disagrees with the market. In this, the information age, where we all have access to prices all over the world, Redbook is losing its value. Carsales is a much better Redbook than Redbook.
Redbook was acquired by Carsales.com Limited in 2008. They're both part of the same business known as the Carsales Network. When you place ads on Carsales, it automatically offers valuation estimates based on the data supplied - and those valuations are based on Redbook. I imagine that the valuations in Redbook are largely derived from actual sales data on Carsales. In other words, the two are inextricably linked and the only difference is that the prices you see on Carsales are for cars that are not sold, whereas Redbook is based on actual sale prices - so there is a time lag and a disparity in offer/sale amounts.

Well bugger me! Thanks Guran. Redbook certainly looks quite different to the last time I visited the site (maybe pre-2008?). Looks like a red version of Carsales now.
Guran wrote:When you place ads on Carsales, it automatically offers valuation estimates based on the data supplied - and those valuations are based on Redbook. I imagine that the valuations in Redbook are largely derived from actual sales data on Carsales.
There appears to be some circular logic in the above...possibly even a positive feedback loop!? Is there actually a way for Carsales *sales* prices to be fed back to Redbook?? I wouldn't bother filling out any details after I had sold a car, if I didn't have to. And if I did, would I do it honestly and accurately???
The below link suggests they do lots of research to get prices from many sources, but I would be interested to know how accurate the data are. I can almost guarantee that the dealer I bought my last car from won't be reporting an accurate sales price to anyone. And I don't like the RMS's chances of getting good data either! I also disagree with some of Redbook's comments, particularly around there being no difference in pricing geographically. Redbook obviously hasn't tried to buy a BA/BF Ford Falcon wagon in Newcastle recently. Or one with LPG...assuming there were any for sale here for the last month! I found a ~$1000 difference in asking price, which must translate to a difference in sales price, surely. Hmmmm.
