My thoughts on LEGAL Turbo engineering (NSW BASED)

All you can really find on the net is people rough figures out of thin air. I'm probably best to give an engineer a call and talk to them. But I'm more curious of what people have payed in the past.

I know how old it is cause I wrote it :lol:

The costs in NSW have not changed significantly since the intial post that was written back in 06. I suspect a big change will be coming in the very near future, the NCOP is going to cause a massive shake-up with things, it's commonly assumed engineering signatories insurance premiums will head through the roof (as the required certifications to become registered are actually moving LOWER) which will no doubt impact on the cost of attaining a certificate from such a signatory.

It'd be nice to think they would standardise pricing on them to make the market more stable, but I don't expect that will happen...

Dweezles car was DEAD STOCK this morning, and tonight has an aftermarket ecu, tune, custom cooler piping, manifold, turbo, dump, exhaust, BOV and goes hard as.

It will be engineered very soon in NSW so we can keep an eye on it. Im sure it will at least need N8B brakes, but that should be about it.

Who's the engineer?
It shouldn't need upgraded brakes to be legal. The brakes are comparible in size and function to factory turbo B6 and BP cars of the day that carried a lot more weight. A good engineer will know or research that and be good to go with that.
Athol Mullins is good if the car is legit and very helpful (he's over near Cardiff).
Can be a stickler on noise and emissions, but I like that. If you're tuning it on e85 it shouldn't be an issue to pass IM240 in service emissions.

Once I get all emissions and supporting mods (brakes, suspensions etc) sorted on my own, to get the actual engineer's report/certificate I've been quoted $1500 by Autosports Engineering.

I have only talked to them so far though, not sure how much other places are looking at.

Thought that seemed a bit steep. Will have to call around some other places.

Are there any contact details for Athol Mullins? Can't seem to find him listed on the RTA list licensed certifiers.

I'll see what I can find, he has been on holidays since before Xmas, I thought he was back and he was definitely suggesting he'd still be certifying under the new scheme.

I agree with Dan, should be under a grand, even for engine, box, suspension and brakes.

Consulmotive (John) is also worth a look, you know he's good when the RTA use him to certify their own vehicles!

I spoke to John at consulmotive and he said he wanted nothing to do with a turbo Mx5 with the new scheme..
Terry Toomey is who i have spoken with.
The RTA seem to love him.
They kept referring me to him.

On which year model? A stage one 1.6NA is designed and "pre approved" so is simple. The 1.8 ones are not. As such a 1.6 should be easier to have almost anyone approve (assuming you have the AVO paperwork).

Just got off the phone to Terry Toomey and he's quoting a figure that is almost $1000 over another guy in South Windsor, for just my exhaust and intercooler! I don't think I'll be going to him for some reason...

Took ages to find out the process from the RTA website, one would swear they don't want us to engineer them properly!

I've only contacted the two of them so far as they're the most convenient for me, but I'm going to broaden my search next week
