Softtop/hardtop latch repair

Postby Gilly71 » Tue Sep 26, 2006 12:17 am

This is for people having problems with the safety button not holding the latch down, such that the latches pop open unexpectedly. Here is a cheap and easy fix that involves drilling and tapping a screw into the end of the safety latch.

First things first, tools and bits you'll need:
Phillips head screwdriver
needle nose pliers
small file
drill and small (1/32 or 3.5mm) drill bit to suit small self tapping screws
2x self tapping screws
a bit of grease and wd40

Step One: Remove the three retaining screws and release the latch assembly from the soft / hard top.

Step Two: Turn over and remove the silver circlip holding the retaining pin on the safety button. Use the flat end of screw driver and a rag wrapped over to catch the circlip.

Step Three: Remove the retaining pin, spring and safety button

Step Four: Mark and drill a small guide hole into the head of the safety button, make sure the hole you drill is close to the size of the screw thread, otherwise you may snap off the screw heads if it's too tight. If it ends up a little loose / or you strip the thread don't worry you can use a little 5minute araldite to set the screw in place. Once drilled you can tap in your self tappers until they are seated against the old locking face. Test fit the button and retaining pin without the spring and circlip to see if the screw head clears the latch handle. If it doesn't you may need to file the screw head down to suit.

Step Five: make sure the screw is short enough or that the end is ground down enough that it doesn't foul the retaining pin spring.

Step Six: Refit the retaining pin spring first, noting that the spring is seated into a small hole on the latch body.

Step Seven: Fit the saftey button over the top of the retaining spring, and refit the retaining pin and circlip.

That's it, you should now add a little bit of grease to guides and screwhead and some wd40 to the andoised components and hinges.

Your latches should have a positive lock mechanism that'll hit home with a reassuring clunk. Now you can do the high speed run down the front straight of your local racetrack or favourite road without fear of your soft top becoming a parachute.
