Fence sitting till after the weekend, will have a better idea on Monday. It ran fine at Morgan Park, however the suspension 'cluck' may not allow a weekend workout.

Prodsports Queensland, in partnership with our category sponsor Wellpro were so impressed by the response to the first mx-5 challenge at Lakeside, that we thought we would keep the party going. The second event for the year moves to Queensland Raceway and the number of first time racers is very encouraging. Distinct from any College style frat house hazing, or naval equator crossing shameful induction, the mx-5 racers are a welcoming bunch. Rookies, typically those transitioning from sprinting to racing are invited to join in the fun, minus the binge drinking and locker room theatrics. The seasoned veterans will be on hand to offer advice and wisdom where required.

As per the previous round, the categories are based on lap time brackets set on the national circuit. Do a faster time at any point and you end up in the quicker category for the weekend.

Class A Sub 1.24

Class B 1.24 < 1.27

Class C 1.27< 1.30

Class D 1.30+

There is a wide range of vehicle and driver performance on show, and those that may think the mx-5 is all about coaxing an under powered car to a tidy lap will be in for a surprise when last time winner Brendan Whittaker goes head to head with Brian Ferrabee. The arms race between these guys in the past 12 months has escalated with the turbo charged monsters testing their drivetrains and pushing well below the 1.20 second barrier.

A showcase event this may be, but it is not being treated as a dead rubber by any of the regular Prodsports championship competitors.

Tim Wallace and Paul Ansell have both been dogged by reliability issues all year, but have been on the pace against Tony Ross, Greg Quince, Angelo Servodio, James Hay, and relative newcomer Shane “iceman” Freese. Lisa Montgomerie’s times are also tumbling and her car has plenty of pace to be in the thick of the action.

Freese was one of the fastest aspirated Mazdas on track at the most recent event here at QR and this has not gone unnoticed. Freese was previously head mechanic to Servodio’s Phat Wheels and tyres race team, and now racing his own car has sent his former boss into a mad scramble for horsepower.

Tony Bonnano returns and will take the fight to Henri VanRoden, Tim Janke, David Smith and Shane Plohl.

Jaime Patullo, Francois Siebrits and Sonke Hatje will be certain to test their off track friendship as they seek to out race each other for chequered flag glory.

Adam Shipway and Ross Ponting will be joined by Greg Schweikert, Grant Watson and Julian Greenwood as first time door to door racers making the transition from sprinting.

A fantastic weekend of racing and comradery is expected in what we hope to grow into bigger and better events in 2017. The Toyota 86 vs MX-5 challenge perhaps…….

There were smiles all round at the end of the weekend, so I'm thinking its safe to say everyone had a great time.

For those who missed it there is a live stream that has the last (wet) race from Saturday, and all day Sunday where there was some fantastic racing happening throughout the entire field.

https://livestream.com/qldraceways/events/6625582

Congratulations to the class winners, and especially those whose first time it was trying door to door racing.

It sounds like Prod Sports plan to do at least another 2 events similar next year, but there is always the 6 normal rounds if you need a bigger fix of racing.

I'm sure plenty of in car video will emerge over the next few days.

Thanks everyone who participated in the weekend and made it possible.

Dewi Jones has put together another promo video from the QR meeting, similar to the one from the last Lakeside MX5 Challenge. Dewi was only available at QR on the Saturday, so footage is all from qualifying and races 1 and 2.
