MX5 club of Qld has several track days throughout the year. Non-members are welcome.

For most entry level stuff you'll need a full face helmet that meets AS1698($200) a 1kg fire extinguisher that's properly mounted ($40 + hardware to mount it), and a blue triangle sticker marking the location of your battery ($10 at most racing shops or MYO), and long sleeved and long pants 100% cotton clothes & enclosed shoes.

Best bet, is choose an event, contact the club running it and ask, but read the supplementary regulations for the event, which will point you to the CAMS manual for car, clothing and licensing requirements.

You will also need a racing license, unless you go to a 'come n try' day, at which the club with supply a day licence. CAMS L2S will be sufficient for hill climbs. I'm not sure about AASA licences.

The easiest (and possibly cheapest) event to start out in is motorkhana. It's low speed, you'll learn to slide your car around, and you generally don't need a helmet. The HSCCQ runs these in QLD.

Information on MX-5 Club track days, AASA licences, timing transponderss, clothing and entry etc. is all here: http://www.mx5clubqld.com.au/?page_id=51

I believe you will need a helmet for HSCC motorkhana events if you're driving an open car. See 'Attire': http://hsccq.com/start.pdf
