The HSSCQ is running a Come'n'try Khanacross this Sunday 24/8.
The event is held round the back of the Willowbank dragstrip, utilising various bitumen car parks and service roads.
Come'n'try events are held to encourage drivers to try something new, at relatively low cost. Driver's will be informally assessed before being let loose on the course. Juniors can be accompanied if necessary. It's all about making sure everyone is safe, has a good day, and gets the car home in one piece. If you have successfully completed trackdays, motorkhanas, or hillclimbs, or clearly have some self control behind the wheel, you will be good to go.
Khanacross is defined by CAMS to be a non-speed event. It is a short and intense time trial, from standing start to standing finish. The objective is to complete the course as fast as possible, without incurring any penalties, such as hitting cones or failing to stop in the garage. The courses are typically about 1000m long, comprising short straights and tight turns, designed to restrict maximum speeds.
The plan for this weekend is to run one or two courses, and have plenty of goes at them. There might even be a motorkhana course, just for some extra fun between Khanacross runs. It is a very fun day, guaranteed to provide an adrenaline rush and put a smile on your face.
It is a CAMS event, so at a minimum you will require a "Day" license, available at the venue. You also need to present your car to scrutineering in a safe-to-use condition, with a fire extinguisher fitted. Clothing is Neck-Ankle-Wrist, closed shoes and an approved helmet must be worn. QLD registered cars need a CTP extension. The requirements are very similar to a MX5CQ Trackday.
The HSCCQ is pretty relaxed, and family friendly. There is a wide variety of skill levels amongst the drivers, from beginner to expert. The cars presented range from mundane shopping trolleys, hot DDs, purpose built open wheelers, to the outright eccentric, and are classed pretty much according to engine capacity.
The forecast is looking good, so come and have go. It doesn't cost much, and you'll have a blast.
