Lakeside DTC Saturday April 27

Postby Red_Bullet » Sun Apr 07, 2019 12:34 pm

The Sunshine Coast Motorsport Club runs a gymkhana style event at Lakeside on the low speed DTC circuit at the back of Lakeside. The next one is on April 27. I have entered, let's get a few more MXers in and have a fun day!

Should be good weather for it.

But they charge $10 for spectator entry. Pretty lame for a entry level club event.

Just putting it out there. I have followed their facebook page for 2 years. Forewarning those that have been to other basic club level events as spectators and not been charged entry. They the organizers tell me that it is only $10. To get over it. I tell them that they would more likely get more spectators if they didn't charge entry fees, and hence would lead to more competitor entries in the future. But they tell me I am wrong.

If they have decided to stop this practice. That would be great. You can of course contact Jonno or Jay to confirm. Details should be on the FB or their club website.

Turned out to be a great day out. 45 entries. Ran really smoothly, they have a Natsoft timing system, this allows fast turn over of cars. Live timing on the internet. No charge for spectators.

There were a younger group of MX-5 drivers there and just one old bloke(me). Young Ryan Kennedy is one to look out for, won his class and I think 6th outright with a naturally aspirated NB8A. Talented driver. Very consistent and improved gradually all day. http://racing.natsoft.com.au/638890933/object_318061.83Y/Result?1

It's an interesting observation that the MX-5 community is quite divided now along age lines. This is a shame. I think that young folk don't have the opportunity to do club trackdays because they work and are not yet in positions where they can simply take time off work or study to go playing with cars on weekdays. So it would benefit the MX-5 community as a whole if more of us oldies showed up. We have a lot in common with an interest in doing motorsport in our little Mazdas.

My words for quite a while now!

Disagree, it would benefit the community if the club made itself more accessible to the younger MX5 owners. Unless you are saying that the 'oldies' should show up more on weekend events to help the youngsters and not come across as 'elitist' and only turn up to weekday events that the youngsters cannot attend?

I'm suggesting that it would be good for some of us oldies to show up and mix it up with the young folk at the events that they can do. They can't do week days but we can do weekends. It isn't like that I've anything to teach young Ryan regarding driving, he could certainly teach me a thing or two about it! So it isn't about any form of elitism. Then we can be a more cohesive MX-5 community rather than a divided one. Just throwing it out there.

These Sunshine Coast Motorsport Club events are pretty much Marque/brand agnostic too, which is kinda good, there were some remarkable Ford Escorts there, among other interesting cars.

I digress.

It seems to me (please correct me if I'm wrong) that the majority (not all) of the current MX-5 club committee has no interest in the motorsport aspect of the club. That's fine, each to their own. I acknowledge that they do a lot of hard work managing the club to be what they want it to be. I'm glad that they have a club where they can go on Sunday runs, dress up, socialise and have a feed and a chat afterwards. However that isn't why I'm interested in it. Sunday runs around Brisbane environs don't do much for me, they are usually traffic jams at best. Here's an idea, as many in the club are retired, why not do runs during the week, when there is way less traffic on the roads? (And less of the boys and girls in blue putting a dampener on things)

Well that is good if they ain't charging spectator entry now. The holy-than-thou attitude I previously got from them on the issue made me think they'd never change this silly process.
