Looking to join a sprint competition
Just looking for some information about sprint/circuit competitions up here in Queensland, I know there are the track days I can attend. But looking for a 'league' to regularly compete in. I've never done this sort of thing and wondering for those have had or currently are, for some information on how I can get in on it as well.
If it helps ill have a turbo na6, nothing extreme, it's going to be a home brew track car. About 200whp but will adjust to fit into whichever class. Street UHP tyres. Hope to hear from you guys and maybe meet some of you in the future

Re: Looking to join a sprint competition
What do you want to do, sprints or door to door racing?
For sprints turbo na6 is fine and you have plenty of choice, weekend or midweek at qr or Lakeside with the series put on by qr.
Morgan park run the cams sprint series. This is pretty popular with slots taken very early for the following year. They are a well run 6 round series put on by the western downs sporting car club.
Racing is a bit more difficult, a turbo na6 is not eligible for prodsports but aasa will find a spot for you. If you haven't already bought the car, plenty of bargains to be had to run in ipra as well if you are not fixated on a mx5.
In my case, I have a S14 being built, albeit slowly, for prodsports, could also be built for ipra. A small u2 litre ipra car would be just as fun and give you plenty of cheap fund as well.
If you want to have a chat about what you can do and realistic budgets and requirements I will be at the track day on the 15th running my na6 for shots and giggles.

I have already bought the car and am in the process of finishing up my build. I am not too sure what door to door racing means, could you explain. The reason i chose to go with a mx5, was that the overall budget could be kept at a minimum. My current set up costs as much including car value as a stock s14, but i do hear its difficult to enter certain comps.
When you say AASA will find a spot for me, does that mean ill be thrown in with the big boys ? or will i still have a fighting chance. At the moment im up for anything, i am trying to make the 15th of july track day but it depends if i can get everything done by then

Re: Looking to join a sprint competition
Door to door is full racing, which to race in Prodsports, basically a recognised CAMS category who run their own championship up here, your turbo NA will be illegible to compete in as it won't comply with either the 2B or 2F rules as per the cams manual. At AASA race events, basically it's run what ya brung and QR will find somewhere for you to race, but you may be up against a lot quicker cars.
For sprints, not so much a problem as you are running against the clock and not racing so you will be able to find your own space on the track and not be baulked, or baulk others. As for classes you will be thrown into a generic sports car class for sprints, no matter who runs it. If you want to have a go at hill climbs you will be thrown in with proper quick sports cars, but again against the clock.
If you do want to play in hillclimbs, you may find that the car may or may not be accepted depending on the event, eg at the Noosa Classic, it may be more difficult to get a run than at the Noosa mid year event.

That makes me sad For that i would have considered going in a different route than the mx5, but oh well i guess ill just go with AASA events and sprints. I am not so much bothered by the fact that there are cars that will be a lot quicker, id just like to compete with other similar cars. I am curious to know why prodsports don't allow turbo na's as its a popular option to increase performance.

Re: Looking to join a sprint competition
Peter,
Just try the mx5 club days first. It's a good idea to get a couple of track days under your belt.
Yep the mx5 is pretty out gunned now. But you have to remember its a 25 year old design.
The mgcc mt cotton hill climbs are a lot of fun, plenty of mx5s run there
Also email QR raceway or phone and have a talk to Neil, they put on a heap of sprint events for people.
There are also driff nights on Friday which from everyone I talk to seem to be a bucket load of fun
Phol (Shane) does dirt sprints in his mx5 and loves it.
If you want to run door to door, there are qr sports and sedans, but there are a couple of stupid quick cars.
Or pull the turbo off the car and come race in the MSC seriers that I will be running next year. It's like PSQRAC, with out the super cars and real production cars you see on the road in Australia

Re: Looking to join a sprint competition
Thanks fellas that's a good point, I should try my best to get as much seat time as I can before competing in a comp, dirt sprints that sounds different but interesting where do they hold these events at

Mazda MX-5 Club of Queensland - Motorsport Championship
This will do the trick for you. They are sprints mainly, apparently with the odd hillclimb and motorkhana thrown in - they're all "against the clock" not racing which is "first across the line". MX-5s are split into various classes so you're competing against people in similar cars. Enjoy!

There are dirt sprints on the sunday. If your car is running, may as well give it a go.
