The Holden Sporting Car Club will be holding a Come'n'try Motorkhana at Willowbank on Sunday 7th April. That's next weekend! It is in a couple of bitumen car parks around the back of the drag strip. For most, it is a 1st and reverse gear only event. That may sound slow, but the courses are tight and challenging, and going fast at low speed is a lot harder than you would think, and gives a real adrenaline rush.
The format will be slightly different this time, with no formal tuition session. However, you can ride and observe with others, or have someone in the car with you (if not a competitor, they need to sign a waiver and observe usual safety requirements). If you would like this to happen, just ask one of the experienced punters on the day. You will quickly see who they are! You will find everyone quite enthusiastic and helpful, so don't be shy. We are all there for a good time.
You can enter at the HSCCQ website or on the day. You do need to be a member of a CAMS affiliated club such as MX5CQ and need a CAMS license (a 30 day license can be purchased on the day if you need). A helmet is required if you are driving a convertible (soft or hard top). Gloves, roll cage and fire extinguisher are optional, but your car needs to be in generally good condition especially the brakes, steering and tyres.
You can compete in comfortable clothes i.e non-synthetic shorts, short sleeved shirt, covered shoes and socks.

These events are usually quite popular, so it might be advisable to enter prior, or at least let the organiser Keith Butcher know you are coming. Contact info is on the supp regs available at the above link.
You can see the comments and photos etc from the last event at http://mx5cartalk.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=71&t=56132
As always, I hope to see plenty of Fives and some new faces out there.
Cheers all.

PS: If your car is QLD registered you also need to organise a CTP extension (aka Rally Extension) and bring the letter with you on the day.

Re: Motorkhana Come'n'try 7/4/13 at Willowbank
Today I went and lent a hand at the MG National Meet Motorkhana in Toowoomba. Conditions ranged from cool, dry and overcast to absolutely bucketing down. They had 97 cars, with two runs at each of three courses, so there could be no "rain delays". The course I was timing was on concrete hardstand that sloped to one side of the course. On that side, at one stage, there was at least 100mm of run-off to drive through, in mid corner. There was even a whirlpool at the drain point! One of the other courses reportedly had 1 foot of water, but I think that is a fair bit of exaggeration. There were some really beautiful old racers there, TCs, MGAs etc. Some of the guys in the MGBs were really struggling to see thier way as the cars were so fogged up. They all had a good time though. Well most did.
I doubt if it will be that wet at Willowbank. Forecast says showers.
