MX-5 Club of NSW - NSW Supersprint Rd 2 - Sunday 14th May 2017

Postby MX5_Club_of_NSW » Fri Mar 24, 2017 1:35 pm

The next round of the state supersprint championship is being run by the MX-5 Club of NSW at Wakefield Park on Sunday 14th May 2017.
Entries will be via CAMS Event Entry (CEE) which can be accessed thought the Members Portal on the CAMS home page (https://www.cams.com.au/).
If you want to enter this event and you don't have your CAMS ID and Password handy, now would be a good time to contact CAMS and get that sorted.
Entries will open very soon.
Hopefully we can see a great turnout of MX-5 Club members to overtake the ARDC in the championship.

Championship points are scored by those registered in the championship for their nominated club.
Registration usually opens late Nov for the folowing year, and is full within a few weeks
Non-registrants can enter events, but they dont score championship points..

You also have to pay a $50 annual fee to participate in the championship. That pays for the (many) trophies and catering at the presentation evening.

I wonder whose $50 paid for the catering for the 2016 presentation?

Just a reminder to Supersprint registrants to get your entries in.

There are two rounds at WP, and these are important for the Club. Firstly, this round is run by the Club, and we all want it to be successful - for the competitors, and the Club. Secondly, 'away' rounds are usually good for the Club's, and individual driver's, pointscores - as because of distance and the nature of WP, some competitors choose not to make the trip. All the better for us, so it would be good to have a great rollup to capitalise.

The Club has made a great start to 2017. I understand that adjustments will be made to the points to correct some errors in the first round, so that we may even be leading the pointscore! As there seem to be a number changes working their way though the system we should not get too excited, but to get a good result at Rd1, on ARDC's home track, and one that attracts a lot of the big-engine cars, is a great way to start our 2017 campaign.

See you at Rd2 :)

Quick count of 89, 31are MX-5s, really why would you race anything else?

Because MX5s are most competitive in 1 or 2 classes, out of about 24 or so. In fact, in my opinion they are the best car for only 1 class...4A (Type 2F under 1.6). They can do OK in other classes if reasonable competition doesn't turn up, which is often the case. But if you have a look at the various lap records for the NSW supersprint classes, there are very few held by MX5s. Guran used to hold all 1A, but I think he has one or none remaining (Guran?). I have one in 4A, and hope to get more as this is a new supersprint class for NSW. Tony might have a couple too...not sure. For every class other than 4A, there was, is or could be, something faster than an MX5.

Now I brace myself.

Edit: If more parts were available for the Elise 1.6, or if someone really develops the old Honda CRX D series engine, perhaps the MX5 is best for no classes!

OK if it is trophies, series points etc. that you are after then maybe you would consider something else.

For me, the MX-5 is the most fun car I have dríven.
I had a 240z in the 1970s and thought about another of those. Thought about a Lotus Elan. Didn't even consider a front wheel drive or a FWD based AWD.
I didn't even know about the MX-5 Cup before I decided to get one. That's where I'm aiming. Supersprints are great fun but for me a means to that end. I need to learn to drive before I go there.

I still hold the 1A lap record for Druitt Circuit at SMP but that's only because that round in 2016 was wet. I worked VERY hard developing my driving skills over a few years to set those records in my old NA6. Getting into the 1:59s at SMP-GP and 1:14s at Wakefield Park is not likely to be repeated in a stock NA6 (a stock 1.5L ND on the other hand???). Then a young guy buys himself a 1.6L Lotus Elise, competes for one season and blows all those records away while barely testing the ultimate capability of the car. He's now sold his car, claimed his trophy and moved on. It's a sad demonstration of chequebook motorsport and definitely not in the spirit of what Type 1 is meant to be about.
