MOTOR SPORT COMPLEX - WAGGA WAGGA

Postby zero00 » Mon Jan 02, 2012 12:14 pm

I happened to be in Wagga Wagga for the Christmas break when details were released to the media on a proposed Motor Sport Complex to be built, east of Wagga Wagga about 30km just off the 'old' highway alignment. If you know where the RAAF Base is, then maybe 10 minutes east of that

Attached is a link to the 'Wagga Daily Advertiser' with some details

http://www.dailyadvertiser.com.au/news/ ... 02563.aspx

This would be the only facility between Wakefield Park & Winton, 4 hours from Sydney and 2.5 hours from Canberra. For the record whilst I am in Brisbane i am 25 minutes from Lakeside but 2 hours from QR and Morgan Park is a 450km round trip but who cares?

I am sure once this goes ahead, the east freeway drive up or down the Hume Highway will attract a lot of ardent MX5 drivers

Thanks for the update, I await the details with interest.

I wonder will it be a Wakefield competitor straight up, or is that one of the later stages? All will be revealed next week it seems, but regardless I will not be getting too excited until the dozers roll ...

As far as competition for other circuits goes, remember from Melbourne and Sydney you have to drive past Winton and Wakefield to get there, what, five hour drives frrom each and three from Canberra? I would not like to be the promoter.

The only hiccup I can see would be Council themselves or from local residents. The farms in that area are not 'weekender' types and I believe satidfaction has been reached with them. I know quite a few of those within 'the team' and this is a genuine effort to get something up. Like you, look forward to next week

Wagga Wagga City Council is looking for something 'BIG' as a tourist attraction to get people to the city, they do see this as that 'BIG THING'

Location is east of Wagga Wagga between Forest Hill RAAF and the Sport & Recreation at Borambola along the 'old' Sturt Highway route

If you enjoy a track distance isn't a worry, whilst I live between Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast, QR is a 250km round trip but Lakeside is only 37km away! QR can still take over 2 hours in the morning to get there given you have to pass thru Brisbane. When I was a Wagga Wagga resident the old 'Hume Weir' was all that hosted 'Sprints' in the 1970's, a scary track to say the least when in your 'daily drive'

I will make a few phone calls this weekend and get the latest and report!

A layout of the proposed track is attached to the proposal, so should you be interested, please PM me with your email address and as soon as I get time I will send - just in case I get swamped with PM's :!: :!:

The petition MUST be signed by June 1

I must have missed your reply above, thanks for that. I understand what you are saying, but remain unconvinced of the financial viability of a new circuit there. While that depends on just what the financial investment is, and how quickly it is to be recovered (as well meeting all outgoings), it needs a certain level of patronage as spectators and competitors. Don't get me wrong, I hope it comes off, and that it is successful.

PM sent.

I'd never have thought Wakefield Park would be a goer either but it is! Give people options and they will go where they like it best - Ihave three to choose from here, Lakeside [37km] Queensland Raceway [112km] or Morgan Park [222km]

Lakeside is my favourite yet a lot of guys are total scared of it, not much room if you have an 'off' and the armco is inviting!!

The proposal is no 'flash in the pan' and the driving force behnd it have many years of both motor racing and motor cycle racing - I'm not sure how far you go back but I can remember doing my first Sprint meeting at the Hume Weir Circuit. Wagga Wagga has a big following and if you do it right it will work, I took almost 2 hours to get to QR last Monday and 3 hours to get home, Canberra to the location is a comfortable 3 hour drive

Looks great - nestled in a valley and running around the edge with a couple ascents/descents. Should be great viewing for spectators too. Petition signed. 8)

Thanks for that, I'm hopeless with uploading things!! The Secretary of the Wagga & District Car Club [Debbie] who started the petition is emailing me a PDF version which will show better definition than this one attached

The support from the MX5 guys and NSW and Canberra people in general has been overwhelming for them and very much appreciated, Debbie will keep me up to date almost daily from now on what is happening and I have sent this website to her so hopefully she can also come on

I will PM you Guran with some other info

Thanks again

Looking at the layout, should the direction be clockwise then there is an uncanny resemblance to turns 1-2-3 at Lakeside!!

I will post a better layout map as soon as I receive it
