Re: Wakefield Pk Club Track Day May 31
another brilliantly run day. I wasn't sure about the new dummy grid arrangement but seemed like people got the hang of it pretty quickly
Congrats to Todd with a 1.05.04 (unless he went quicker) which is the fastest MX5 time I have seen at a club day
It was my first time running MCA Reds and I was very impressed, managed to knock 0.6 off my best and got down to 1.06.12

Re: Wakefield Pk Club Track Day May 31
It was very well run, with only a few small hiccups. The slowest cars in our group ended up sorting ourselves out, as they were sending 2 stock NAs out in front of an NC, even though the NC was consistently a few seconds faster.
Had a great day, managed to get down to 1:25, and only spun it once.
Absolutely can not wait for the next track day. And even though I'm keen for the Motorkhana day at the end of June, I just don't think it's going to be anywhere near as much fun.
Thanks to everyone for all the help and advice, especially my trainer Kevin Addison. Staying in third gear the whole way round meant I was able to just focus on improving my line.
And special mention to Paul Byers for the quick and dirty tutorial on building an MX5 trailer.
Also if anybody has any good pics of car 38/138 going around a corner, I'd be stoked to see them.

Re: Wakefield Pk Club Track Day May 31
Another well run day by the usual busy crew of organisers.
I was slowly getting the hang of running on road tyres and got the gold NB8A down to a 1.16.12 and heading in the right direction - until an unhealthy rattle suggested the main/big end bearings had had enough.
Limped her home, but she is F*****d, so need a good NB8A motor or a rebuild.
No warning signs - running a 150,000km old motor with Castrol Edge with oil level on the maximum, no warning lights and temperature was constant, just a nasty rattle when I came off track last run. It will be interesting to see what failed - oil pump, clogged gallery, oil surge ???
Ironically my two previous 1600s were on track with new owners and running like clockwork !!!
She can winter in the garage while I head north for some sunshine, then come apart .

Thats a shame to hear.
Could it have been a nasty over rev on a downshift?

Nothing comes to mind - I try to be more careful with this car as she is dríven to the track.
On reflection there is a big gap in her service records before the last owner, so maybe she went a fair while without service and while she was happy pottering round the street, a couple of lively runs at Wakefield has dislodged some junk and blocked a gallery. It sounds like main bearings as the rattle is on float, not under load.
It is hard to image running on street tyres would create enough G force for a big oil surge, unless she is pumping a lot of oil up into the rocker cover, starving down below. A strip down may show a cause.
That's motor racing, but a good weekend otherwise.
Thanks to all the official who stood out in the cold .

Dan wrote:^ Agreed, another great club track day, the overcast weather kept it pretty cool during the day which was nice.
The cool weather did trouble me a bit though in my low horsepower car as the big horsepower guys were killing me in the first few laps until my tyres got some heat into them.
Congrats to Russ for getting his Supercharged NC down into a 1:09.10 too, very impressive!
I ended up taking a couple of 10ths off my time and got into the 9's which was nice with a 1 09.87.
Yep, great times by both yourself and Russ. He was trying to break into the 1:08s but the harder he tried the more those wheels spun.

Here's a video of some spills too, most of them were with someone hot on my tail so I opted to ditch it in straight at the first sign of trouble to avoid an incident. A special guest appearance from Phil too
Yes, well that little off of mine wasn’t as spectacular as the last session where I clipped the inside ripple strip on T9 at 119kph and spun 300 degrees, stopping 130 metres into the infield.
The A050’s are gonesky. When new they will warm up within a lap. Yesterday in the first session it took 2½ laps. By the time the last session came around it was 3 to 4 laps before they stopped wanting to make you look just where you came from.

When new they are great BUT they probably only last 4 track days before they start to fall away and by the 8th track day, start looking for new tyres.

That is probably the worst corner for when your tyres are off too, especially in your 2.5!Charlie Brown wrote:Dan wrote:^

It's interesting about the tyres taking longer to come on, like we spoke about I've got the same experience with my Z221's but they haven't got to quite the level of your A050's with mine only taking 2 or so laps to come on. Mine only have 272 laps on them (5 days) between EC GP/South/Wakefield though.
Maybe going off like this is par for the course with faster tyres

Peter, that's very disappointing about your engine. I noticed a couple of runs earlier you slowed down but am assuming that was for a different reason.

Re: Wakefield Pk Club Track Day May 31
I slowed in the earlier session as we were all banked up behind a car who took a few laps to get some tyre temperature, so I dropped back to try and get a clear lap and let you guys go. It worked because my one clear lap was a new pb.
If I rebuild the NB engine I will have a known quantity to play with, but first will have a break in the sunshine, then attack it in the warmer weather. Minus 5 in my garage is not condusive to car dismantling !!!

I thought it was you in that photo Paul. Feared for a moment that had you lived up to your old moniker ... Crunchy! Relieved to hear that the tyre wall escaped your attempt to collect it.

No these have been shrunk down but they are at the end of a pretty cheap lense.
So don't expect too much

I am more than happy to send you the full res of your car if you want?
She will be stoked you like them!!
