MX5 BREAKFAST CLUB – BREAKIE IN GAOL – 10 APRIL 2011
Meet: McDonalds, Richmond Rail, corner March Street & East Market Street, Richmond (adjacent to the train station, opposite Richmond Park).
Time: Sunday 10 April 2011 -6:30 for sign in:6:45 briefing; start at 7.00am sharp. A cup of filtered coffee will be provided of Nicaraguan "cup of excellence", a particular fine coffee. Before and during sign in.
RUN DETAILS: An early 220km run for a 10.30am breakfast at the old Sofala Gaol. From Richmond the route is across the Blue Mountains on the Bells Line of Road to Lithgow followed by a run to Bathurst away from the highway through Tarana, O’Connell and The Lagoon. From Bathurst we head for Sofala on the Peel Road via Wattle Flat, the route is sealed all the way to the rustic and heritage listed village of Sofala.
SOFALA: In the 1850’s the run organiser’s family spent some profitable years in Sofala, the oldest inhabited gold town in Australia, which had a population of around 40,000 at its height that has since fallen back to less than 100 current residents. Though gold mining ceased some time ago there is gold to be found amongst its occupied and abandoned buildings in the village and the relics, tools and machines that litter the surrounding area. Some occupied buildings are preserved in their ageing patina such as the Royal Hotel with the symmetry of an Ettamogah Pub. Some are open air museum pieces whilst others have been restored and renovated such as our breakfast venue.
OLD SOFALA GAOL CAFE: The Sofala Gaol was built during the gold rush to house villains before they were sent to Bathurst. The Old Sofala Gaol, keeping one original cell, has been renovated into a cafe with internal and open veranda dinning that incorporates a gift and curio shop. The recent improvements include B&B accommodation. For the MX5 BreakFast Club the proprietors will provide a special breakfast menu that will be posted on the Forum in the weeks leading up to the run.
RSVP: We have been asked to cap the numbers to 40 persons as there is insufficient internal space for more in the event of cold or inclement weather. Breakfast costs $25.00 a head including a small donation to the Clubs breast and prostate cancer charities. Please go to “More Info”.
There are overflow options. If the weather is fine then using the veranda and interior seating increases capacity to around 60 people. A second option is selecting a bite to eat at the souvenir take away shop next to the pub on the high road in the heart of the Sofala CBD.
Registration: Participants need to register and pay as provided on the “More Info” post in the Club’s Event’s Calendar A running list will be posted on the Forum thread in the weeks leading up to the event.
Organiser: Robert Forsyth Mob: 0408 470 921
