Download, print and bring these forms: Breakfast Menu Order Form | Lunch Menu Order Form | BreakFast Club Run Rules | BreakFast Club Incident Sheet

The MX500 is a classic BreakFast Club one day event for people who love a good drive. The spirited 500km drive is not for the faint hearted. The MX500 is a challenge for one driver, or a bit more laidback (but no less fun) for two. The route is a loop taking in parts of the Blue Mountains, the Central Tablelands, National Parks, State Forests, steep gorges, ridgelines, a cave, farmlands, colonial settlements, over freeways, A , B and sealed C roads out and back to the city.

The route opens with a 77km drive over the Blue Mountains on the Bells Line of Road then across the Causeway for an exhilarating descent of Victoria Pass to Little Hartley for breakfast at the Ambermere Rose Inn, a restored Cobb & Co staging post opened in 1845.

After breakfast a route of 80km dips down through the Grand Arch at the Jenolan Caves then up the switchbacks before a quick run via Edith over gently rolling country to chilly Oberon. A brief rest & revive stop is scheduled for Oberon to allow you to stretch your legs and exchange stories about the long sweeping bends leading to the corkscrew down and out of Caves House and the fast smooth undulating run through Edith.

From Oberon the route heads south for 102km via Norway to little known localities with quaint names like Black Springs, Porters Retreat and the Paling Yards to Taralga over, around and through mountains, cleared valleys, forests and isolated farms on a road rarely travelled. The road was recently sealed all the way from Oberon to Taralga with the new sections reputed to be fantastic. The lunch stop is at the historic Taralga Hotel built in 1876 with its open fireplaces, dining room and courtyard serving up Australian gourmet country pub cuisine.

After lunch the route continues south for 44km to Goulburn. Following a refuelling stop, the route is down the Hume Highway for a 200km run back to the city with the option of taking afternoon tea in a cosy cafe like the White Horse Inn, Stewards or the Old Bake House in Berrima before heading home. From the Southern Highlands you can return to Sydney either down Macquarie Pass entering the city via the Shire, or a quick run down the Hume into western Sydney and the M5 and M7.

Reservations: Not required, just turn up on the day.

What to bring: Start with a full tank of fuel! Pack a UHF CB radio if you have one. Print-outs of the forms linked above.

Organiser: Bryan Shedden (Guran) ... with thanks to Michael Soulos (Midori) for his guidance

Yes you should join the club!

Best to check with Midori, but I'm fine with non-members joining this run, provided they're mx5cartalk members. You just will not be covered under the CAMS liability insurance policy. Midori is the lawyer and can best advise on how it works.

This run will pass through some of the best country west of the mountains - count us in please. We will meet you at the restaurant for breakfast and join in the run as far as Taralga.

Thanks for your call David. I look forward to meeting you on the run.

For anyone who has tried accessing "more info" for this run via the Club Events website, please ignore where it says "Entries for this event are now closed." The run is definitely still going ahead and there is no requirement to submit a formal entry. Just show up at Richmond as above, or phone me to arrange an alternate meeting point (eg. those from Bathurst are meeting us at the breakfast venue).

I'll now try to arrange to have the run details re-posted on the Club Events website.

Bryan,

My plans for that weekend have yet to be endorsed by the Leader of the Opposition (so I may be talking out of school!), however I too may be able to meet you for breakfast, a run through to Jenolan and Oberon, before peeling off at Norway and heading home.

My seemingly semi-regular drives to Wakefield takes me down the same road through Oberon and Taralga to Goulburn, and with events scheduled for the 5th and the 26th of September, I don't think I need to do it again on the 12th!

Perhaps David and I could meet up at O'Connell and then run through the Tarana Valley to Lithgow and then through the gap at the Vale of Clwydd to Little Hartley? If you're keen Dave, call me on 0427 470 075 (ah).

By the way, what time do you plan to arrive at the Ambermere Rose Inn for breakfast?

Tony

The plan is for us to arrive at Ambermere Rose at 9am. We will be preordering breakfast and suggest you do the same if you are organising a small group to leave from Bathurst. Just download and print the breakfast order menu from my first post above. You can then phone Ambermere Rose (6355 2266) before you leave and add your combined order onto ours. This should minimise the time taken to get through breakfast. I'm planning to leave there by 10am. Of course, if you don't want to join the run to Taralga, then a late breakfast won't be an issue and you can order when you get there.

The club website is fixed now. The run details are back on-line. Apparently it was just a mistake with the cut-off date which was typed in wrong.

I'm sure Midori will have some club membership forms on the day. But why not join now and get your membership kit before the run? Its easily the best club I've been in and I've tried plenty. Here is the form: http://www.mx5.com.au/nsw/membership.htm
