The days have long gone where you could stick the car on the dyno, give it a run, adjust the distributer timing curve and throw a different set of SU carbie needles in to adjust the mixture and then head off home with your car (hopefully) running better.
Now with a computer controlling just about every function in the MX-5 there is little you can do to improve the performance of your stock/modified motor without adding a piggy back ECU.
The NA’s can advance their timing to give better acceleration down low at the cost of top end performance.
The Aussie NC’s are not able to get a reliable ECU upgrade. A US company (DP Tune) has managed an upgraded that gained a few kW to their NCs but when tried on the Aussie NC the ECU failed.
So to answer your question, no, "lost" kW's aren't easily recovered.
