Let me introduce my self, my name is Corey and I own a velocity red se. I have been on here since I first bought my mx5 which has been just over 3 years yet have never started my own thread, better late than never. I thought this would be a good way to document what goes on with the car and a place to ask questions when I'm stuck.
For the last 11 years of her existence she's sat unmodified, unmolested by some one who saw her as just a machine to get to A to B. I picked her up with 150kms on the clock and a lot of wear and tear, she has been dríven but looked after mechanically at least. I continued to use her as a daily for the next 2 and a bit years. As an apprentice electrician she was very in practical but still wouldn't admit that to my old man who's been on my back about it since day one.
This is the day I picked her up

The first things I did right off the bat were an eom hardtop and Mazda speed roll cage. As I'm not a small bloke I found the cage to be very restrictive so I ran just the rear section, even that was too restrictive so I sold it off, have an agi one lined up but on that later on.
This is what my boot looked like on a good day.

Re: Sexy's pint size se
For the next year or two I didn't really do any thing to her, other than usual servicing and what not. Since moving along through my apprenticeship and finding a new employer I'm now finding I have a lot more spare money. As of late I've installed an aem intake, dans throttle elbow and bov, boost and a proper temp guage and one of dan's 3" exhausts (yet to be installed).
This brings us up to date with how she currently sits. I am at a crossroad with which way I want to go, do I save and go through the process of gaining more power and upgrading the clutch or do I go upgrade the tired suspension and wheels and tires. I am sort of happy with the power and delivery, she feels very good on a good day but not the best on some occasions which I'm guessing is down to the "bog solenoid". I feel as if the suspension is getting on a bit, the odo is sitting just shy of 210kms and the 4x4 spec ride height in the rear is really bugging me, especially as I've dropped down to a smaller wheel and tire.

Re: Sexy's pint size se
Not long ago I finally got around to getting rid of the slab of fake wanabe silver carbon facia. I've been wanting to do some thing special to make it look nice instead of just going to the factory black facia, I asked a few people on here who were wrecking various mx5s but unfortunately every one was asking unrealistic prices or what I thought was unrealistic. My brother picked up a roll of cheapo carbon wrap off of ebay so I thought I would give wrapping ago.. It really isn't that hard, hardest part was the lighter socket indent so I gave that section a few practices before doing the whole thing. I always thought the carbon wrap looked tacky but I thought as no one makes a proper carbon piece I could get away with it
I thought as I've been mucking around under the bonnet I should take some precautions so I installed pro sport boost gauge and temp gauge, there cheap and do the job, would I buy them again? probably not. I noticed today that the faces have tiny little scratches over them which I can only put down to my microfiber cloth, I only give them a quick wipe when dusting the interior so the plastic must be very cheap and nasty..

Nice Car Corey
I really like the wrap over the silver face and gear stick surround.
I might steal that idea and try it myself.
do you have plans for some go fast bits?

Mine ran 174rwkw (might have been an optimistic dyno) without uprating the clutch. When I blew up the motor at 127,000kms it still had about 10,000kms on it.
Mind you, if yours is at 210,000kms on the original clutch it might be due a replacement anyway and you might as well upgrade.

Clutch still has a bit of life in it but its starting to show signs of shuddering and im pretty sure it slips a little when its warm and if your on and off the clutch too hard or quick. Not to mention the output bearing is getting noisy so yea. Think i might get it done first up next year, deffinetly going to go for some thing that can handle more power but will sort that when I'm closer to getting it done.

Have already done the aem cai and one of dan's tbi. I'm not too sure when i will start to aim for the aftermarket ecu, at the moment i think it will be a while away but saying that i think it will depend what the car will be like to drive after i install Dan's exhaust.

Mazda forgot to put enough heatshield on the gearbox tunnel, especially on the passenger side where the cat is. When changing the clutch is a good time to add extra heatshield under the tunnel.

Miata Mecca in the U.S sell an adhesive heat shield for the transmission tunnel.
Also has one of the goofiest install videos I've ever seen on youtube
I'll be doing this before the warmer months hit.

That's the one. Probs easier to do with gearbox missing than as he does it.

The heat shielding is a little tricky to apply with the gearbox in but if you follow his You tube guide it quite doable even lying on your back under the car.
