Minhtam's NB8B Build - Meet Bev :)

Hellooo my names Minhtam and I have recently picked up an bright red NB8B aka my second mrs, Bev :D

I was on the market for a new car, I read up a lot on MX-5's and how much fun they were to drive, and was in my budget too, with a large amount of aftermarket support it was clear I wanted to own one myself.

I decided on an NB8B because of a few reasons, I wanted a car a bit newer than the traditional NAs, as much as I like the look of nicely modified NAs :). So, I was able to narrow it down to an NB8A or an NB8B, or NB8C. NB8A looked good and were relatively cheaper then the Series 2 models, although the front bumper just wasn't to my liking, so I focused on purchasing an NB8B. All the little extra's made me opt for a series 2+ model, increase chassis stiffness, different steering wheel, fog lights, different stockers and a different engine.

But more on that another time, I was on carsales/gumtree/eBay a lot on the hunt for an NB8B, it had to be stock, under 150,000 km's, well maintained, and in overall good condition inside and out. Over a fair while I went to look at a few MX5s around the Sydney area, the second I got into an MX5 for the first time and was taken for a test drive it was awesome! Smooth power output, suspension wasnt too soft even from stock, inside was nice and 'cosy', and most importantly, it handled like it was on rails ! Loved it, and definitely knew it was what I wanted.

Enough of the chit chats, a few inspections blah blah blah. I picked up a surprisingly clean red 2000 NB8B :D.

Here's what she looked like in carsales :

I've owned her for a couple months now and so far I am loving it, I picker her up 100% stock so was stoked, I've made little touches, a few mods here and there since she has been in my ownership to make it a little more personalised to me. I'm looking forward to learning more about these cars and getting more into the MX5 community :)

Thanks for reading,
Minhtam.

... ah, so that's where this little red NB8B went. It was priced pretty nicely and I was even considering shipping it over to Melbourne. Congrats on the purchase and welcome to the obsession!

Ahh yes, you must've seen it too. It was a great pick up for the price and sweet talking the seller a bit helped too ;)

Oh okay I see, thanks for the help guys.

Something I put at the top of my to-do list after I picked up Bev was to go for a text book scenic drive on a beautiful sunny spring day down Wollongong Grand Pacific drive, it was perfect weather and I was absolutely loving it ! Car felt great and it felt so good to have the top down and just to go for a weekend drive.

haha, red was not my first choice of colour but it came up and i couldnt refuse, green isnt so bad i guess!

Although the car was fine and freshly serviced, during inspection my friend and I noticed a few faults that would require fixing. One was the usual browning of the radiator, not a big deal although not wanting to risk a cracked radiator and overheating in the middle of a spirited drive i quickly sought to purchasing a replacement. Changed that over and filled her up with some fresh coolant and it was all sweet. On the same weekend I got the other small issue fixed up, some oil residue around the engine blocks head. Small fix again, just bought an OEM rubber head gasket from MX5 Mania, took off the head and swapped it over. Gave the engine a good decreasing and problem solved :). Definitely gave me peace of mind that my radiator was solid, and that there was no more engine oil leaking out around the head.

On another note, a few weeks after picking up Bev, I was on the hunt for a set of coilovers straight away. I could not stand the stock height..
Shopped around a bit, considered Yellow Speed coilovers, BC BR's, and a few others. I stopped by Otomoto in North Parramatta one day originally looking to buy a set of Nemoto Sprints in 15x8 +5. Speaking to the guys there I also asked if they had any coilovers for Bev in stock, surprisingly they had HSD Coilovers in stock. So we were able to negotiate a good price, so I picked up both the HSD Coilovers and the Nemotos Sprints!

Driving my MX5 there, there was no way I would fit a full set of wheels and a big box with the coilovers in... drove to my girlfriends house to get her car, did a bit of research on the HSD brand to see if they were ok and it looked all good. So, proceeded to head back there a bit later and picked it all up.

Great looking NB, good choice of colour.
Nice looking set of rims, I've been watching a few on eBay, cheap but wrong offset for me.

Same, I've constantly checking forums/ebay/gumtree for a good set of wheels to come up. What specs are you ideally looking for?

Thinking about it ! Maybe Recaro or Bride seats? Adjustable ones though, not a fixed back..

UPDATE

Got the coilovers fitted :D, car rides so much better with them on and the ability to adjust the height and damper is a big plus.

Winded the coilovers almost all the way down when they got put in.. man, it was so low. The tyres would already be touching the splash guards. Drove it down the street scraping and scrubbing so raised it back up not long after.

Raised up a bit, but not yet at an equal height but lowered all around to just tucking the tyres.

My steering was slightly off after the coilover install so went and got a wheel alignment the day after.

whoa.. how low (mm) does your car sit right now? it does seem as low as meanmx's one. i personally find it hard to driving that low with all the scrubbing and scrapping. but nonetheless, your build thread is looking good. any potential upgrades on the engine performance side?

It was pretty low, you know all the strut bars under the our NB8Bs? they were a few centimetres above the ground when the wheels were put on, I couldn't even drive on a straight road without scratching something, or something hitting the road... speed humps were impossible to get over without making a scene haha. But it looked mad :P. In terms of engine mods, been looking at an intake, not too sure about the rest. Putting on a turbo kit would give these cars so much more of a kick!

A week or so after the coilovers, the Nemoto Sprints got some rubber put on.

A few photo's if you need to know how the wheel and tyre specs fit on a NB. Keep in mind my car wasn't lowered enough, there was still a two finger gap in the front, and the back I think.

Being pretty low already on the stock 16s, and putting 15's on with small and stretched tyres, I forgot about how much lower it would be to the ground and well..

Did some landscaping :(
