Evill II - Road car to race car

Postby emexv » Wed Jun 20, 2012 8:48 pm

Now the majority of the build is completed I thought it would be time to introduce Evill II.

We sort of. Boyracer actually did a few months ago but he disappeared. The following pics explain why. Evil II is named as this is the second MX5 SE to leave the Boyracer stable and head to Victoria, the first being Mrs B's Evil. Evil left Sydney as a prepared race car, however Evil II was stil a road going car, although had a few parts missing. Below is a bit of a summary of the last couple of months. Obviously there is allot you can't see and there were plenty of very late nights and blood, sweat and a few tears........

As he was when I picked him up from Sydney

And home sweet home after 11 hours (Thanks Dale for donating the hard top  )

Genuine

Just the heat/air cond left to come out

Cage nearly done

Time to paint

And some more paint

There was allot more work that went into this then you would imaginn

Made door cards to clear the cage

The office

Ready for some hot laps

Cooling down

Showing off

So after 2 months of hard work he finally hit the track. Overall a successful outing with just a little bit of remedial work to do. From here on it will be working on weight reduction, car setup and most importantly........driver education.
Cheers
Mark

Looking good. Planning to put a front splitter on it?

Lovely looking car...Would you have the time to do a 'how to' on the door cards?

Yes, they are. So far they seem ok. I didn't necessarily want cheap gauges. I wanted digital displays so I could read them easily. They are certainly that. I checked the water temp against an infra red pyro and it was exactly the same. I guess time will tell how reliable they are.

The door cards were pretty easy. I got hold of some old NA cards that had good pads. I bought some 3 or 4mm MDF (Can't remember), some vinyl from spotlight and some spray on contact adhesive.

I pulled the pads off the shitty door cards and used the old cards as a pattern to cut out the MDF. Once cut out I covered them with the vinyl using the adhesive. I screwed the MDF to the doors and then fitted the Pads and secured with a couple of screws at the bottom corners. To make it look nice I used little plastic caps that slip over the screws to give a nice smooth, black finish.

If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.
