Jimmy's 5

Postby shake and bake » Mon Jan 23, 2012 5:13 pm

Hey folks

Ive been around this forum for a while now and have owned my MX 5 for around 2 years, so I thought i'd make myself one of these garage threads. Anyway, heres the basic Info.

I have been lucky enough to purchase an MX 5 as my first car after plenty of saving and some help from my parents (im a Uni Student). Its a 2000 NB8B in Supreme blue (or Midnight blue?) so its one of the first of its kind as I understand. It had around 100,00kms on it when I purchased it and only has around 108,000 now. I caught the mod bug fairly soon, and most of the mods can be attributed to the recommendations and pics I have seen on this forum. Ive made a basic list of the mods I have made to the car as well as some ideas for the future. Ill try and get some pics up of the the car as well as the mods and mayb some of the issues that arised with some of them during installation as I find this can be very helpful when deciding to purchase some new bling. If anyone has any questions about anything feel free to ask here or send me a pm id be more than happy to help.

So here's what I've done, as well as a few pics, Ill try to update this whenever something new arrives!

Hope you enjoy!

cheers

Jim.

There were a couple of minor issues with the DDM Intake. If you search the forum you can find that they have been mentioned. The only real issue is that the K&N pod filter under the box slightly rubs on the AC line. It makes it a bit tricky to attatch but it can be done. I have ordered a slighhly smaller filter which should fit fine, ill see how it goes. Otherwise its awesome!

Now you just need some HUGE brakes to fill out those wheels.

Welcome! One thing.. As somebody who bought an NA with heavy 16" Bob Jane wheels, swapping them back to 14 inch rims made a HUGE difference to pretty much everything. Handling, braking, accelerating. Can't imagine how 18inch wheels must feel. Google "unsprung weight" and you'll see what I'm talking about.

Nice and clean. 8)

Forget the fog light cover. Take the left hand side foglight off and run some tubing into the airbox.

Looks great.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

Yeh I bought the car with the rims already on it. I think they look great but understand that they're not the greatest performance wise. I might invest in another set, maybe some 15's or 16's just to change it up a bit. As a mechanical engineering student im aware of all the unsprung weight business, but they're soo cool!! 8) Suggestions are welcome! :D

wouldnt be a bad idea but I just cant bring myself to cutting holes in my car!!

yes I completely agree. That was one of my main reasons for looking at some coilovers. Im basically waiting for the current shocks to bite the dust, im pretty sure they're the original shocks too.

oh and there are very nice trim kits for the centre console. Maybe worth looking into
Im sure uve seen on the nb8c's how the centre console has many silver/satin features in it. Adds a nice touch! It's like $50+ but eh.. if u got the extra dough doesnt hurt.

Im thinking the car definitely has to get lower. Been looking at some yellowspeed coilovers although from my reading the rears are not height adjustable? Will probs go with bc.

Might change the look a bit with some new lightweight wheels. Any recommendations? Im thinking 15's or 16's in matte black. Maybe some from 949 racing. What offset should I look for? Was thinking of giving that plasti dip stuff a go to get an idea of the black wheel look. Its a shame they cost so much over here compared to the states, found a distibuter in the states that was willing to post but thought it was too risky to get through customs. Seeme like the going price for a can out here is $25. If there is somewhere cheaper let me know!!

Looks good. Before the pictures loaded I thought 18s would be ugly as hell but actually look alright :D
Well done ~
