Jorgan92 - White NA8

Postby jorgan92 » Mon Dec 12, 2011 10:29 pm

Well after 6-8 months of searching I finally found my MX5, was a long trip to get here but now I'm here I couldn't be happier.

My dreams of owning an mx5 would have started in when I was about 10 and Grand Turismo 3 was released, and I spent countless hours doing the races you did not require a car for just to save up for the MX5, always loved them, while the other the other little kids were drooling over Porches and the like I fell in love with the MX, fast forward 9 years and I was finally in a position to buy one.

A little about my previous cars:
First car was when I was 12, was a 1969 Mini Cooper S to this day I still have it, and it still hasn't ever been dríven for longer than 10 minutes and never been registered :P it is considered my on going project with my dad. I bought my first car with my own wad of cash at 14, a 1977 mark II 2 door escort, IN GREEN! my pride an joy, purchased without an engine, it took me 2 years to get it on the road, its mildly work with a cam a rebuilt carby, machined head, extractors, loud arse exhaust and Koni coilovers in the front love it to death the plan was to get a MX5 to daily and finally get on the track whilst I SR20 the Escort.

Well after searching high and low, for the better part of 8 months my preference swapped between na's and nb's about a million times, but every time I took a ride in a NA I left it wanting more and knew I could never buy an NB, Hell Grand Turismo didn't even have NB's! After wanting a Montaego Blue one forever, the dream quickly died after realizing how rare they were and the condition most were in vs. the asking price didn't make it too viable. So settled on my second colour preference, a white one!

This particular one popped up on eBay late one night and I was dying to look at it, was fairly stock, came with a new "mohair" hardtop (which after seeing it look more likely to be canvas thank god its not fury!) and a Carbon Fiber hardtop. And not much else. Rang up the seller the next day only to find out he was up the road from me, and rushed round after work that day. On closer inspection the car was a lot better than expected at only 180,000 KM's it wasn't particular high for an NA, had the 1.8 which was a plus in my books, also had had the lifters replaced as well as the timing belt and water pump and also a few seals done at the same time. Car also had an exhaust which always helps. Put down a deposit the next day, and had to wait a week for a RWC.

Picked it up on Friday COULD NOT BE HAPPIER! First thing on the to do list when I got home was hard top off, roof down, followed by replacing the stock Nardi with a Nardi Classic 330.

On the to do list is finish detailing it (ran out of detailer half way through clay-baring it today) and fix the bonnet, it makes a weird whining noise :S sounds like a bearing or something but if you put your hand on the bonnet it stops..... will look into it tomorrow.

Mods to follow will be Coilovers of some sort (havn't worked out what yet I HATE DECISIONS!!!)
BD roll bar (don't know if I should go for the NA one with the diagonal bar it looks better but don't know if I want a glass window. )
And some form of intake (again to many options)
Then later down the track some wheels, diff etc. etc. to too fussed about wheels at the moment just want to get rid of 4x4 height and onto a track ASAP.

At the moment I'm just loving driving it, its nice to have a car you can buy parts for off the self for once, that also has all the bells and whistles, like a working fuel gauge and headlights that you can see more than 2 meters with.

And here are some quick pics I took today (none with the hard top too nice a day):

Jorgan, how loooow do you want to go?
Once you've found a height you can live with (diveway scraping, speedhump scratching etc tested), will you be doing some wheel shopping?

White NAs are in my opinion one of the best cars to show of wheels.
Especially if you want to have a few mad sets.

What's on your crystal ball re wheels?

I'm looking at getting some Varrstoen "VT's" from the states in 15x8 +15 work out to about 800 landed. Just like them because they look a little more like real TE37 (not the "v" series) or drifteks yet to decide on colour. I want to do them takata green. But will order in black and see where to go from there.

Friend that works at a tire shop gave me a call and said he can get me any of the axis range for for like $550 but they all don't look quite right.

I also need to find someone with a Sprint V that I can sit my arse in to see if i fit as i just got a stupidly good quote on these new through work :]

Quick update, I get Mondays and Tuesdays off, looks like Coilovers did not want to come in at a suitable time will have to wait till next week to install them if they come soonish.

Reading up on advancing the timing, might give it ago tonight seems fairly straight forward, just need to pick up a new timing light, a friend stole mine and lost it -.-

Looking at ordering wheels maybe next week if all goes well. Can anyone confirm or deny that 15X8's +15 will fit the guards with a tiny bit of rolling, stretched tires, and some camber, I dont want to be pulling guards.

Wheels I'm looking at getting:

Also got bored yesterday so sprayed the wiper arms black (looks way better) and whacked the hard top on, weathers been fairly dismal down in Melbourne lately, if it stays on till the end of the day Ill take some photos.

As long as you're planning to run 195s you should be fine...but it might be a tight fit.

I agree, it will be a tight fit... I test fitted -alex's set of 15x8 +6f / +13r with 195/50s for a day.. With non rolled guards it scrubbed quite badly over bumps...

With rolled guards they might have just cleared but it would still be very tight. Keep in mind the pic on the front is +6 as they have spacers to clear the brakes... I could also run slightly more camber (I can't remember what it had then, around -2 to -2.5) However I think to run that x8 +15 and have no issues you'll need to pump the guards a little as well.

Nice car by the way, good to see you've got one!!! I hate the gearknob but everything else looks clean ;)
