pauls trailer NB MX5 rear cut

Postby PAU61L » Sun Nov 27, 2011 10:19 am

Hello everyone, finally decided to make a matching trailer to go behind my silver NB8A.
So here are few photos, I got the shell after it had been t boned, it was bought back as a wreck and stripped.
I have stripped the suspension, brakes, doors, fuel tank, muffler and a other stuff, if you want something let me know.
So how you see it is how I got it, BUT if you see anything in the pics that you need, please contact me with a price.
I have paid for the shell and any dollars will help with the build.
Will get suspension set up, before I cut it in half at the back of the doors.
The plan is to leave the boot lid and opening as is, have a removeable drawbar and put a BBQ in the front, it will happen but not overnight.
Paul.
PS for a laugh do a google image search for "matching trailers"

It's extremely odd seeing leaf springs hanginf from teh back of an MX5!

Yes it does look strange, a group of us went to Phillip Island last year, we had three different trailers with different suspension, short leaf spring, rubber torsion and standard leaf spring. The standard leaf spring behaved the best ie following the car and not bouncing. It is also the cheapest and readily available, I can get the height right in the build process, by using a standard axle, an offset axle, axle on top or under the spring or by using spacers.
so much fun, why didn't I get one sooner !!!!!!

Greg Rooke and Carco built the Canberra club BBQ from a rear cut, which is regularly used for club outings.

Uses leaf springs and 15"MX5 rims. Seems to tow well.

BBQ in boot that hinges out.
Storage and extras in front compartments - battery with isolation switch, storage compartment (fits awning plus accessories) , fridge(esky), sink with electric pump (water tank underneath filled through fuel filler), fire extinguisher, gas bottle, rubbish bin, cd/radio with electric arial, electric boot release, etc.

Is very popular with the public when taken to car shows.

If you are ever in Canberra contact me or Carco and come and have a look.

Thanks, spoken to David at Carco, waiting for photos. Have found a posting in the usofa with details of his conversion, so I am trying to pick the best ideas from everybody.
I have seen the Carco photos, but am wanting a larger bbq, we will see what happens.
I have sorted out how I am going to mount the springs, so have to get some welding done.
THEN some cutting, which David said will take alot of time.

Hello Phil, the matching trailer will not be ready, I will be taking the fridge (pics to follow, I don't have any of the silver fridge).
Sailor is coming down on friday to fit towbar and take tyre trailer.

Just a few more photos, will get chassis welded and installed, then do floor, fix front bumper bar, still have to figure out top front corner to bumper bar, any sensible ideas that are cheap would be appreciated, Paul

For the corners - why dont you just fill the most of it with timber or whatever, then fill it with plaster base coat until you get the right shape. It is easy to work when you get close if you scrape it with a tool before it goes fully hard, like 90 percent hard. Then you can use some top coat and then hifill primer. Take a mould of it, and make it out of fiberglass. Cheapest and easiest way to do it.
