Stoogey's NA6 - Moving Up In Life

Postby Stoogey » Thu Sep 29, 2011 12:07 am

Hello hello hello...

About time i show my face after much non-member status lurking around here...that was even wayyy before i got my hands on an mx5 :D

So heres a quick summary.

Previous car was a 94 Civic EG.

Image

Up until a few good weeks ago, the car was fine, but out of nowhere it decided it would be funny to blow a headgasket... (JDMST members will know of the car)

Image

At that point in time, i was looking into Starlets....yes....Toyota Starlets....EP91's in particular....good combination of size, fuel efficiency, reliability and can look damn sweet with Glanza conversions done to them.

Take a few steps back, and we find out that i have ALWAYS wanted an mx5 (na6/8 in particular), but they have always been abit out of my price range and i was thinking more practicality then anything.

So after the civic died (no, i didnt want the hassle of having it repaired or a new motor dropped in), i went on a hunt for a new car, it had to be manual, so yes, the civic was auto, Starlets were cheap and plenty and i had enough for a decent one, came very close to grabbing one but figured i'd hold out because i had my uni break on so a car wasnt a complete necessity. In that time i was borrowing mums car when i could (that including waking up 6am to drive her to work sometimes so i could have the car). The civic with the damaged head gasket is for sale as is for those interested.

I put my arse into gear recently, got more shifts at work, was very strict on my spending habits, and sold a whole heap of uneccesary junk i had laying around the garage (crap gathered up for the civic....). At the end of it all, which was a few days back, i had a sit down, looked at my piggybank and thought....hmm...not bad. Went to have a look at a few on the cheaper end of the spectrum, found one, did abit of bargaining, and came home with this...

I am generally not a big fan of red, but this is an exception. The body work is fantastic, interior is nice and neat (albeit the fact that it had trashy seatcovers and floormats) and the main thing, is that it drives PERFECTLY, not a hitch, starts first time everytime, clutch is in good nick, and it just feels nice to drive.

The downside. Shes got 260,000km's. To some people, thats probably a worry, but for myself, it wasnt that big of an issue because of the price i paid for it, and the fact that it was looked after and the owner was genuine about it. There are logbooks and receipts to prove it too.

I have heard of stories of na6 engines lasting wayy longer though so that puts my mind at ease abit.

The car is a daily, so i wont be doing anything too crazy.....yet, basic things such as wheels, coilovers, front lip, sound setup and basic engine mods (intake, header exhaust etc) are all on the books though.

First thing will be a go over the car and a service. Transmission fluid change may be first on the list. Sorting out the rear window is after, its very hazy and yellow/brown, replacing an entire top is too much for me at the moment so im looking at my options. This is actually my first manual car, i got my green p's the day i picked up the car, lucky fella i am. I have had VERY little experience with manual cars before but i understood the jist of it, so picking it up felt like second nature to me, only stalled once over the past 2 days at a set of traffic lights but all is good, and hillstarts aren't as scary as i thought, overall im still not that smooth yet, but im working on it.

In the meantime however, im just gonna keep enjoying driving it. Such a blast. The gf loves it, although she wants to name it "Cherry"....im not too sure about that......

Cheers,
Dave

Nice one, saw the ad for this one and thought it was a good price if it is still well sorted engine wise!

One tip from my (limited) experience.. don't use Subaru Upper Engine Cleaner. That was when I started getting problems and then the Mazda service guy (whom I called only to talk to.. i didnt take it to Mazda) said, "Why the hell do people keep using that stuff". No doubt it works in some instances but not worth the risk for minimal/perceived performance gain. IMHO.

If your willing to pull the top off the frame, you can get a new window for about 150. If you give them the car to do it, looking at 350.

a dodgy would be to carefully cut the old window out leaving a 25 mm lip and glue a new bit of plastic to it. Should last for a while till you can save up for the repair.

260,xxx km's it's not even ready for a pension yet, provided it's been maintained and looked after which, by the looks of it it has.
Congrats, I'll always be a sucker for a well sorted NA. Well done!

Congrats on your promotion to manual driving. :D
I did enjoy your welcome on your thread on JDMST, with all the gay hairdresser comments... I think this will be a lot more fun than an auto Civic and you will find you'll get a lot of attention from other NA/NB drivers!

What's the story with the red colour polish? You should see what colour the car really is, under that colour correction stuff... plus give the car the bird. Loved those pics aboe.

The MB St Ives thread in Events on Wednesday nights is worth checking out (SAU members plus others incl. quite a few MX5s) but you really should look at the FnC events. Even more fun.

Sounds like you picked up the right car, so go and enjoy it!

Yeah, i'm also curious about that red Turtle Wax Colour Cure. Have you tried it yet? Is it meant to camouflage small scratches and swirl marks? Is it any good?

Ahhh thanks for the tip.

I was doing abit of research on it and thought that it was pretty good stuff but then again, i am sometimes also abit iffy about sticking random chemicals into my car. I think the only additive i've used that has proved itself has been nulon injector cleaner (at least i think it was nulon) and that was in both my previous cars. For the mx5 however, i may get the injectors taken out and properly cleaned with o-rings replaced etc.

I have read a few guides and such from miata.net and so forth and although i am confident with a wrench and basic servicing, replacing shocks etc etc, i dont know if i wanna pull the top off then attempt to put it back in after its been fixed. Having a professional replace the rear window for roughly $350 sounds pretty darn good in my books.

If anybody knows anyone around sydney (the closer to south-west the better) that is top notch with soft tops please let me know.

Finally, someone that understands! Haha, most people that dont understand cars just thinks that 260k on any car is too much, they tend to be very ignorant of the fact that if its been looked after it will be no problems at all. Would rather a well looked after 260km car then a neglected 100km car anyday.

Yes, driving manual is great fun! Still getting used to it but im becoming alot better and can actually go a whole day and not stall at all now. Although i did stall tonight reversing into my garage....funny that.

I agree, i reckon this is more fun than ANY civic :D, have had a few appreciative nods from other na drivers already, and also a wave from an older nc driver.

The turtle wax is what the previous owner used, apart from that, i have taken all that stuff out of the boot and havn't touched it since. So im not 100% sure what its like. The car hopefully is getting a wash tomorrow night.

ak_perth wrote:Yeah, i'm also curious about that red Turtle Wax Colour Cure. Have you tried it yet? Is it meant to camouflage small scratches and swirl marks? Is it any good?

Havn't tried it yet. When i clean the car inside and out, i may give it a go over with it and see what its like, unless someone recommends otherwise.

I will let you guys know how it goes if i end up using it.

Couple of nights ago, gave Meguiars PlastX a go to see what it would do to my rear window. Was cheap, so i figured i couldnt lose out too much cause i'd end up using it on my headlights as well.

Before application.

Image

After application.

Image

The window is beyond repair, it will need to be replaced, but the stuff did help clear it up a LITTLE bit. Maybe one or two more applications may yeild something abit better.

A complete top replacement is abit pricey as i may have mentioned, so i will have to keep doing some research and looking out for info on replacing just the window locally.

Next up i just went around the interior and cleaned anything that needed to be cleaned urgently.

Image

That now looks much better and not like it came out of the great barrier reef.

I havnt gone over the rest of the interior yet as i dont really have a proper interior cleaner so i'll have to do some research and shopping to see whats good out there (thats not too pricey). I may end up staying with the Meguiars range of products.

On the way home with the car when i got it, it started sprinkling abit and as soon as the wipers came on, it sounded like fingernails on a chalkboard...so the old wipers had to go, and on with the new!

Image

Now for the best part about what i've found in the car...

Lifted up the centre ashtray and whattayaknow

Image

Has been used already and gone towards some 98 in the tank 8)

Last night gave the rear window another treatment.

Image

Didn't change anything really.

Went on to cleaning the headlights using the PlastX stuff, they definitely needed a good go over both of them (thats what she said...)

Before PlastX

Image

After PlastX

Image

Came back from a drive and filled up the tank with abit of 98 before the long weekend rush.

Wide awake now, might go and change the transmission fluid....yes...right...now.

Last night got cranking with the transmission oil change.

So...first things first...the fill plug....that thing is an absolute BASTARD to take off without a proper hoist or something.

Took me a while till i found a short bar i could use to help with the extra leverage. The drain plug was pretty easy as i could get a breaker bar on it and cracked it with ease.

Image

Image

Remember kids, anti-seize is a bolts best friend.

Image

So the gearbox drained and it wasn't black but was nearly getting there, very dark with a brown/red tinge to it. Roughly 1.6-1.8litres drained out. According to the guides ive read when i refill it roughly 2 litres is supposed to be taken so that didn't seem too bad.

That pump off course didn't end up fitting on the Nulon bottle...

Image

Not to worry, duct tape fixes everything...

Image

The car wasn't high enough off the ground for the bottle to sit up near the fill plug so i had to get the fill tube sitting through the front wheel arch.

Image

Image

The pump had a locking bit on the end that clips itself onto the thread of the fill plug hole so i didnt have to hold it there.

Every pump filled 30 mils the package reckons so according to my calculations last night i needed 66.7 or so pumps for it to get to the 2 litre mark. At about 75-80 pumps it started spilling out the hole so that was not an issue either. I also remembered the the car was on stands so it was sitting at an angle therefore the fill capacity may be a bit different.

Next up was the turret oil.

Got it cracked open.

Image

Turns out both shifter boots are slightly torn and ripped.

Image

Image

Heres the bummer part...lifted the shifter up...

Image

NO OIL!

Didn't feel rough whilst shifting at all prior to me discovering this, but good thing i checked it when i did.

All good now, used the syringe and shot some of that nulon stuff in and it's good to go. I know having a torn boot renders that nearly pointless, however, in the meantime it will give me some peace of mind.

Last thing for today.

Noticed that the handle for the soft top was missing a bolt, it wasn't moving or anything, but i noticed it and it's a dead easy fix so will scour for some at work tomorrow. Looks to be an m4 size.

Mini update.

Before i got started going over the car i found something to keep me company in the garage.

Had to have a mate (cobby) tell me what was going on for me to figure out that i had to pull the a/c vents in order to remove the tombstone...i was afraid that i was nearly gonna break it. Shoulda sussed out miata.net's garage first before i got stuck into it.

Image

First up, lets get this old jesus spec sanyo cd player out and see whats going on with the wiring.

Image

Radio and such worked fine but the cd player wouldnt read disks properly without skipping ever 30 seconds or at the slightest bump on the road. The standard speakers will have to go anyway. I do enjoy abit of music so my old JBL gear will be transplanted over, well, most of it anyway. I am at the moment trying to suss out where i can install an amp and a 10" sub.

Image

The previous wiring job wasn't too bad, it did have a twist & tape job but wires still had tags on them that told you what was what and it was all done semi properly and wasn't as big a mess as i thought it would be.

The sanyo headunit had 2 plugs going into the back as well, one for power, ignition and ground and the other for speakers. So i had to do a quick job with twisting and heatshrinking the kenwood plug on, nice and easy.

Image

I generally NEVER do twist and tape work, i always solder and heatshrink, but this is very very temporary till i figure out an amp and sub solution. So i will definitely not be leaving it like this.

Next up, the tombstone went for a quick clean along with the a/c vents.

Now that i have a look at it again, i need that 1.5 din cubby to fill in the gap. Looks ugly without it.

The ashtray looked like it had sticky crap on it as if coke was spilt on it, so that went for a clean. Came out looking very worn and old, its not even black anymore, its a brown/yellow'ish tinge now.

Image

The shift boot has a few rips and tears in it as well, so that will go eventually as well.

Image

Thats all for now.

Yeah i used that Nulon 75w-90 i had in there.

Quite temporary though as the smaller shiftboot is broken so slowly slowly i'm guessing i'd lose abit of oil from there anyway. But some oil is better then none right now till i can fix it.

Next up was to just temporarily finish off the sound setup. I havnt looked in depth into amp and sub mounting yet so i just fitted the fronts and headunit in so that i have some tunes in the meantime on my way to uni and work. This is a super dooper temporary setup. Others who have seen my previous setup would know that if i was doing it properly, i'd be going the whole shebang with dynamat and the works.

First off. The door trim came off. Good thing i had trim and panel tools on hand as i probably would have broken something like a plastic door clip.

Image

There was a central locking actuator fitted to the door lock already so that confirms my theory of the fact that the car previously had a full alarm system installed. There is a siren and also boot and bonnet triggers on the car as well but they all seem to be defunct. I will have to look into removing it all and replacing it with another system (never done car security before, might be interesting to try out), or trying to see if the current system still works.

When i removed the stock standard speaker, which let me tell you didn't wanna come off, it literally just fell apart in my hand, it was that old and junky.

I did manage to scavenge the stock speaker rainsheild and tried to fit it to the jbl 6.5's i had.

Image

It was a no go. Some quick work with a stanley knife.

And wallah!

Image

Next up was to clean the mounting area. Apply some foam to seal the edging and give it a cleaner fit and then quickly wire it up.

Image

No shitty electrical tape here.

The stuff i used for the edging was this.

Image

$2.98 at your local bunnings, where lowest prices, are just the beginning.

Image

All mounted and ready to rock.

The headunit was all finished up as well and mounted.

Image

I desperately need a 1.5 DIN cubby.

And those damn holes that the previous owner/s drilled into the tombstone is abit annoying as well...

Got rid of those blasted fully sik NOSbro rubber floormats and put some normal people mats in.

Image

So much cleaner to look at and you cant go wrong at $9.95 a set.

Also got some stuff ready waiting for my next service.

Way ahead of schedule but i figured i'd get it done anyway so i know exactly what i've got inside the engine.

Never used Valvoline stuff before so hopefully it will be good. Im looking at trying Penrite next.

The blind spot mirror is because im not a big fan of the passenger side mirror.

Would kill for power windows/something else haha

Just a super quick one.

Cleaned out the throttle body and intake manifold today.

Fairly straightforward process, so much sh*t connected to the intake system though

Image

Image

You can see all the black gunk inside the intake mani chamber, thats all crystal clear now. I didn't take an after photo cause my hands were dirty and i didn't wanna play with the camera (ie. i was too lazy to wash my hands).

Started the car, the idle farted around for a few minutes with some funky smoke coming out the back, and then awesomeness....back to normal and car idles much cleaner now :)
