The journey to Apu

I figured it's time to tell my story since Apu will spend the next few days at MX5Mania...

My car ownership journey started in 1992 with a brand spankin' new Daihatsu Mira. That's right...all of 647cc filling 3 cylinders that revved it's heart out to 32kW. It was cheap, fun, super-economical, had two seats and more luggage space than I needed. And I was regularly mistaken as the Pizza Hut delivery guy...the fact that it was red didn't help.

Second car was much more interesting. Two years later, I acquired a white 1994 Honda Civic VTi and promptly drove it into a kerb. My first experience with understeer, lift off oversteer, and an unhappy girlfriend who had to come pick me up. That was a lovely stretch of road though...winding, convenient, scenic, within city limits...Melbournians will know what I'm talking about.

Following that, I moved to Singapore...and that was a shock for the system. Think price of a 3 series BMW for a Toyota Corolla. Took me about 3 years to get over the sticker shock before I bought an Alfa 155. Sweetest sounding 2L 4 cylinder, but it had the most unreliable fuel pump and...a bunch of other things.

Many angry threats from girlfriend convinced me that buying a used 155 was not the best idea. Sucker for punishment that I was (am?), I decided that buying a NEW Alfa would solve my problems. I'm not sure if it was Alfa (un)reliability or intensive modifications were the reason for the Alfa 146 spending so much time in the workshop. Either way, it proved that that particular girlfriend was a sucker for punishment. Great minds, methinks. She married me, and was brave enough to have that Alfa as the wedding chariot. But just in case of problems, I had the Alfa Romeo Owners Club in convoy... :?

We moved back to Australia 7 years ago and after a stretch of incredibly unremarkable cars / MPVs (some I still have...unfortunately), mid-life crisis took hold. I wanted...nay! NEEDED a car that was fun to drive, and a convertible so that I could feel the wind rush through my fast receding hairline.

So I did what every desperate male in my situation would do. Go out and buy the first MX5 I test drove. Eh, it ran well, was less than what I was prepared to pay...and I now look like a freak with 4 silver cars at home.

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you Apu.

Unfortunately, Apu had to sit in the rain and unbeknownst to me...had blocked drainage channels. Thanks to Ajay from MX5Mania who handed me the most hi-tech tool for solving that problem.

Removing insulation.jpg

Apu now does not have any underfelt, which is fine - I intended to strip the insulation anyway, but was too lazy to get to work with dried ice and a wire wheel. At least that made it easier for me to wire up the Stebel horns, haha!

More pictures to come as I add stuff to Apu!

I should add, the plan is:
- adjustable cam gears - being fitted during the 100K service
- coilovers
- full exhaust
- roll hoops
- intake
- ECU and dyno!
- lightweight wheels...going to give a try to some K-Speeds (never heard of 'em?)
- maybe race seats

and of course as many track days as I can get my grubby hands on. Those Federal tyres on the car are rubbish and I can't wait to wear them out!

I'm guessing you know the MX5 in stock form is a very capable track car!
A proper roll bar, good wheel alignment, suitable brake pads and tyres will set you up for the track.
Your money - your choice.

Yup! Had a friend that ran a stock NB6 (with SSR wheels) on the tracks in Malaysia...very hard to catch, but he did open wheeler school so he's a bit better trained than most!

I'd like a little more grunt and better growl from the exhaust. It's a bit of a sewing machine to me at the moment.

Any recommendations for wheel alignment in Sydney? I'm in the Epping area.

Nice to meet you (and Apu) this morning and I hope to see you at the same place tomorrow.

Just a warning - apparently at 8.30AM the Renault club is meeting for a drive and I think that PITS is the meeting place. Good guys but there may be little or no parking. I've done a bit of a drive with them before and it was HUGE - almost 40 cars all up!

I hope that you might be able to meet Neil one day; he and his Mrs have a really nicely set up NB that the previous owner meticulously upgraded at a cost of $9k and that included the Mania intake and some nice exhaust. At 4k rpm it sounds great and on coilovers, you're between the great growl and amazing handling on the twisties uphill to PITS.

So that car is evidence that it's possible to get a great note out of this car and out of yours. :)

And for something completely different and wacky - a V8 transplant to get both an amazing V8 sound and the sound of getting 7MPG! :D Big job and the choice of Rover or Ford 302 V8 (carbs, no ECU issues) or a crate motor like in this NC! From the Kiwi MX5 forum:

Bizi - it was good to meet you as well. Unfortunately can't make the drive today as I have to prepare a report for work.

I'll have to keep me expenses in check or I'll go over board! I think the next expenses will be on roll bars.

Unfortunately the adjustable cam gears I have can't be fitted to my car due to the VVT? Looks like I'll put them up for sale soon!

So I got me some "man-bling"...much to wife's annoyance!

I had it done at MX5Mania and have to say that of all the exhaust systems I've had on my previous cars, this one has given the most gain. I didn't have the car dynoed so I don't know the real difference but I can now drive in 6th rather than just cruise and bog down at the sight of a slope. 5th is also much more useable now.

It's a lot shinier than I expected...and of course it had to rain when I picked up the car!

And of course, where it all starts!

Thanks Dale! The previous owner had a minor fender bender that wasn't repaired well - ie bad paint job. Clear overspray, some bits of clear flaking off...needs a little touch up and a good cut and polish to clean up the paintwork.

Just installed the MX5Plus roll hoops...I'll never recommend doing it single handed. What a friggin' PITA to do alone!

Pics of Apu and the hoop bling, please!

Is this the same as the hoops in NIMO and does this mean I can put my hand up for Vic's set? :) Exciting!

Would you be able to join us around 8.30PM Wed night at the carpark opposite Max Brenner St Ives, to show it to us? :)

While we're on the topic of bits that could be from NIMO, those seats could be nice in yours!

Yup, will post pics soon - same as Vic's.

I ordered mine from MX5+ uncoated - wasn't sure if I wanted to sand it down then clear coat it, paint it, etc etc. In the end, I used K+H Stone and Chip Guard! It's got a crinkly effect, supposedly hard wearing and if I have to touch it up...its very easily to blend, haha!

The only problem is that I have glass window on the soft top...a bit of a squeeze and the fit is pretty tight so with the top up, and the weight of the window, it actually makes contact with the roll hoops.

It shouldn't... Mine never touched the soft-top at all, had it installed by MX5 Plus tThemselves.

Mine is a single hoop fitted to a NB8B and the naked bar cleared either hard or soft top.
When I added the padding I had to trim the rear part of the padding to clear the roof.
