Andy's MX5 Race car

Hi all, just thought I'd post about my car I'm building.

It's an NA MX5, started life as a 1.6, but then I upgraded to a 1.8.

Now it's getting a 1.3 - but a 1.3 without pistons!

The aim is to enter it in Superlap / WTAC this year.

Currently it's getting the engine put in. After that, MX5Mania will be doing the brakes, suspension, wheels and tyres, Bond Roll Bars will be doing the roll cage. The current plan is to pull the engine out and build it a bit more strongly before the comp.

Here are some pics of the conversion in progress:

Awse, loads or rotary fans here just not too many conversions. Thanks for deciding to share with us, can't wait to see more.

Thanks guys! Danny: I just subscribed to your thread, your project looks great and awesome workshop! I was considering the Renesis engine but then I thought, bang for buck I'd probably be better off with a peripheral exhaust port rather than a side exhaust port engine. I do love the Renesis engine though; so smooth!

My next step it to take a trip out to the guys putting the engine in for me with a few exhaust manifolds and work out what will fit with the steering column...

Also, http://racecarparts.com.au helped me out with a seat! Score!

A few more pics! I don't know what I'll do about the bumper since the tailpipe has moved to the other side through the muffler change. Also not too sure where the wastegate plumbing will go!

Cheers all!

Hey i have a carbon vented bonnet here you can have. It is in two halves at the moment [skin and frame] it may be too light even? Have it sitting in the moulds at the moment so can be stuck together easily. I am in penrith where are you?

That looks like the biggest possible turbo you can fit under the hood of an NA without cutting up the hood:

- it's almost as big as the rotary engine!

Hi all, the wastegate actually scrapes on the bonnet a bit I've discovered!

Sorry that the video is so dark, I was just so excited after I got her running that I had to video it!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_hCHTW71NXU

It's only running on the factory ECU at the moment, idles really rich, rich-lean hunts badly when I connect the narrowband output from my MTXL into the factory ECU (just stays rich in open loop mode), and goes really lean and misfires when you put your foot down. So next step is obviously to put on an ECU and tune it!

It's going into MX5Mania on Monday for suspension / brakes / wheels so I guess after that's done I'll get to installing the ECU.

Cheers!
Andy
