MX5 drift build

Hey guys currently building my mx5 for drift so far its coming along to plan :)

1990 NA Mazda MX5

modications so far

- Bc br type coilovers
- Twin Core radiator
- 16x8-+0 sportmax Xxr wheels
- ebc ultimax pads allround
- nismo shifter
- nardi deep corn 350mm wheel
- Tyres
Front: saliuns (sh*t i know) 205-45-16
rear continentals 205-45-16
-oem hardtop
-garden edging front lip
so far body wise ive pulled all 4 gaurds out fronts about 20mm and rears about 15mm ive lightweight filled them and primed them ready to go also fixed a couple of little marks in the rear qaurter

future plans are:

- bigger sway bars
- the big brake kit
- drivers side bride fix back
- half cage
- adjustable suspension arms
- jap wheels (equips longchamps or hoshinos
- a turbo conversion of some description trying to decide wether to turbo the 1.6 or try and track down a 1.8 or 2L motor get it built for turbo ect.
- 2 way diff
-hyrdaulic handbrake (stock one sucks!)

Looks like a great project.

Have you considered using wheel arch fenders? It might go with the theme of your build and keep those wheels tucked under.

yeh ive considered it but at this stage i want to be able to not run them quite yet but if i decide to pull some camber out at anystage itll probaly be the go

nothing rediculous, nothing like 215 45 i had on a 9.5" wheel on my old car haha

Im looking at this atm, have you considered just using a spool diff rather than a 2 way?

Do other people have thoughts on this?

Also what cage are you looking at going?

BD or Mx5+? Or another?

From my understanding both of these bars seem to be a bit lower than they can be to allow a hardtop to be fitted, you don't happen to know if you can get a higher one that only allows the soft top to go up? Just because I'm reasonably tall and would like there to be as much clearance above my head as possible in the event of a rollover.

Have you looked into how much clearance you can get with what seats? Bride super low with a Zeta II/III?

most likely ill be looking at getting a brian davis one , seat rail wise i dont want to go that much lower as im pretty happy with the height but at the same time i wouldnt mind trying out a super low rail as im pretty tall myself. ive ran a welded diff before in my previous car (s13) and loved it but ive herd they can cause understeer somehow? anyway after i sold my old car which was a bit of a pig i got this so im kinda heading in the direction of doing things properly i really wanted to get the most out of this car as i can see the potential they have :)

Hmmm I had a 2 way in my r32 and a 1.5way in my s15.

The more people i talk to the more im heading towards going a spool.

Yeh I'm about 6'2" and my head is only 10-20mm under the top crossbar atm. So with a helmet that is effectively 0.

Hoping to get down 50mm and maybe a slightly higher bar, just for a safety margin.

I can imagine that in relaxed cornering it could cause understeer because both the wheels want to turn at the same speed, ie. go straight ahead. But once you're cornering at speed - or sideways - I think it would be the best option to get the power down. That's just from thinking about the mechanics of it, rather than hands-on experience. Not something I would use on the street, but for a track/drift car a welded/spool rear end makes perfect sense.
