Broady's Montego "I can't believe it's not green" Blue NA8

Postby broady » Sun Nov 22, 2009 12:57 am

Hey everyone,

I'm Broady and I love to drive my MX-5. Thought I'd log various things here, so I can look back later - oh... so you guys can have a gander too

It's a Montego Blue NA8 - rare colour apparently, only seen a couple others. It's just ticked over 137,000 km, and I've had her since around April 2007.

[insert girthy explanation of car's history here later when I have time]

Abridged history/log:
?/04/07 - bought car! ~ 115km on it
?/06/08 - tein super streets
?/02/09 - torsen type 2 lsd
16/08/09 - fully sick head unit (old one broke)
16/09/09 - buddy club p1 sf rims - 15x7 w/ re001
21/11/09 - installed bd bar and gv lip
18/12/09 - installed sparco sprint V

Coming:
Cut & polish - desperately needed
Carbing strut brace w/ master brake cylinder stopper - where should I buy this :?: :?:
Underbody bracing
Thicker, adjustible sway bars -- mania signature bars?
In the far future when I graduate and get a job - intake, exhaust, cams, ecu 8)

Shout out to:
StanTheMan - for installing my coilovers and being a great bloke
AJ & Okibi - for being old fart cardigans who keep me in check
My mate Pete - for helping me install my bd bar & gv lip today

BD bar was simple enough to install, though I still need to dremel out captive nuts on the b pillar, and under the parcel shelf.
GV lip was a sinch to install, and I'm still legal ride height (just...)

Going to Oran Park tomorrow (22 Nov) for a stunt drivers course with rally school
Pumped 41psi (hot) into the tyres and stiffened up the Teins a shitload
Should be fun

How did you not have a car thread by this point?

I like it though, very nice colour.

Looks good Broady!, although I do like those 5 spoke wheels you had to start with... Do you still have them?

I was thinking exactly the same thing about those 5 spoke wheels - they looked so clean on the car :)

But but, before turbo-ing it.
please get yourself an intake and also headers, cat, and exhaust. =)

love to see your time in track soon.

Yeah Gerard & Mike I still have the old rims - they're sitting in the garage - might put them back on for shits n giggles and take a few photos.

I put up a few photos of the car (dirty from the skidpan day) above - afternoon sun hides a lot of the dirt but you can see where I went digging with the GV lip

The day was a total blast! It was 40+ (peak 42) out at Oran Park for the whole day - I was the only one without aircon pretty much (spent the day topless)

Basically it was a bit of a driver training course rather than stunt driving. We didn't do any handbrake turns or anything like that (sadface)

The first couple of exercises were high speed maneuvers down the straight onto the skidpan - simulating lane changes, etc. I got through these pretty well at around 100 km/h - the other funny thing was that I had the only car without ABS! It was good practice though, now I know much better how to brake without locking up and when the car *will* lock up.

After lunch we did a slalom exercise (motorkhana style) - this was great and the car felt great - I think I should have pushed much more though, I was a little slow!

After that was the circle of doom on the skidpan - unfortunately it was so hot that all the water dried up within minutes. I really struggled to get sideways (let alone keep the car sideways) and didn't get much help from the instructor :(

Then we did another motorkhana exercise - clover leaf - but a big one - all in 2nd gear.

So yeah, in summary, it was a real eye opener on my driving skills (lack thereof) and also how the car handles in various situations. One of the points that the instructors kept nailing into us was vision - and when I consciously made an effort to look where I wanted to go, I found that everything I did was much smoother and more controlled...! Awesome tip!

Next up: Wakefield track day on the 6th! My first track day - hopefully someone experienced can help me out!

I'm going to look for an open faced helmet on the weekend - any suggestions on where to look? Don't want to spend a fortune of course!

Motorcycle shops. you can pick up Helmets pretty cheap at most of them, Full face usually start at about $100, open face are usually a bit cheaper.

make sure to try a few on though, the helmets always seem to cater for people with tiny heads.

Oh don't worry, I have a huge head :D Yep, gonna hit up some bike store that my mate recommended in the city.
edit: just had a look, looks like there are a few places selling open faced helmets from around $50! Bargain!

And yeah, I'm not sure if my old rims go with the whole boyracer look I'm going for ;)

I'm sure Boags would like to take the credit, but he just supplied the car and the camera-woman :)

The driving instructor we had that day (advanced driver training course) was behind the wheel for that vid. We did get pretty good at doing it by the end of the day though :)
