This car has epic stance. Love it!

wazman wrote:Yes......I know the older more sensible members of this forum will be shaking their heads at the impractical seeming ride height.....

Heh heh, but that's the beauty of the car and the MX5 club/these forums, plenty of variety.

So, you've obviously been playing with Nissan hairdryers for a awhile, what encouraged you to try Mazda's own brand of hairdressing? Was their a particular car, or just heard good things? By the looks of this, you had plans before you even got your NB. Been hanging out in the JDMST picture thread perchance?

I went to a WRX / Skylines sprint day at winton on the weekend.

Even at the ride height i'm running the handling of the mx5 is amazing !! my best time was a 1.47.01 sec...... fastest time of the day was 1.35 by a skyline with 400 rwkw !!!!

Image

Image
4.3 deg camber on the back made for some fun inertia slides in the esse's :)
Image
On the road my front tyres dont scrub barely at all......on the track in hard cornering however my front guard, mirror and wind screen were caked in shredded rubber 8)
Image
It didn't seem like i used the brakes much but even so the front wheels were covered in brake dust by the end of the day. ( i washed the car the day before)

Thats coz natio is really smooth silly. Try mccars creek and then you'll change your mind when you go head first into a cliff face like i did. Apart from hitting the ground the suspension geometry is way out at that height.

Wazman you car looks amazing, glad you had fun on the track.

I think it has more to do with luck (and the MX5s great chassis) that it handled OK. I am sure a stock suspension 5 would run circles around your car.
I luv the look, but the handling would put me off.

Ok after going to the track i am a bit worried about my actual temps and decided its time to put some gauges in....... copying the S15 silvia style i'll put em in the air vents because i dont want ugly pods on my dash.....

I bought a set of "osiris" 63mm gauges off ebay. Water temp, oil temp and.......boost !
Image

I began by removing the shifter and stereo surrounds.....
Image

Image

Image

Disconnect the lighter plug by squeezing the little tab thing down and pulling..... it should come off easy.
Image

Next bit is the interesting bit..... getting the ball vents out.....They are held in by two clips on either side of each vent.
To get them out i stuck my hand in where the pocket hole was (which also just clips in at the sides, i just pried each side out carefully with a rag rapped flat blade screw driver) (the rag prevents damaging the plastic's) I poked up each side of the vents from below until i felt the small flat blade screw driver wedge in between the white clip socket bit and the black tube vent side.... then i just twisted the screw driver a bit and this undid the clip bit enough to wiggle each side out at once...... I hope the pics help explain what i'm trying to say

My finger is pointing to where the clip point is on the vent once removed....
Image

Image

Image

I did pull my glove box out to look up in behind there to see what was holding these suckers in after some serious yanking yeilded no results.
To get the glove box out just squeeze the sides in where the stopper lugs are and let it swing down then pull each hinged side down and it just unclips.
This also made it easy to see what held the pocket in place below the stereo.

The in line water temp sensor add in bit thingy ( sitting on top of the box in the first pic) wont be used......its ugly..... i will get a fitting and weld it into my rad later.

I want all my original gauges to keep working so i bought an adapter from "merridian motor sport"....... so i can fit the new gauge sensor and the original pressure sensor.

Image

The original oil pressure sensor is located under the intake plenum on the 1.8 ltr....see below
Image

After much swearing and blindly feeling around....... i got the adapter with new sensor screwed in.....The original sensor gets screwed in after because it hangs out the side and you wouldn't be able to turn the adapter to do it up otherwise.....Be sure to use thread tape. (just go round twice, to many times and the thing wont do up properly !)
Image

I mounted the boost gauge sensor on an existing bracket with a zip tie :| and used one of the aux outlets on the plenum for the pressure.
Image

i ran the wires through this rubber socket (back R/H corner engine bay)
Image

and they came into the car here above the right drivers foot...
Image

I'm sure everyone has their own way of getting power and ign.... but i just used a simple tester light and the stereo harness to get the wires i required for the gauges... I just used some wire joiners from jaycar and it all worked fine 8)
Image
Image

yeah i know the gauges are already in that last pic ! its just so the noobs can see where i was getting my power from

Getting the "Ball" bit out of the actual vent component is not such a pretty task..... slight damage was caused to the little clips that hold the face ring
onto the back section  nothing horrible, but still i think maybe someone thats less of an axe butcher could do it nicer than me

Image

Image

once the ball bit is removed the hole in the face bit was the perfect size for the gauge ! YAY no dodgy foam filling etc!
Just clipped the face bit back on and stuck the gauges in.......
Image

Note the cable that are hanging out of where the stereo sits ..... they are plugged into the back of the gauges, i allowed enough slack so i can pull the gauges out and fiddle...... its a tiny plug and i didn't want to wreck it by stuffing around in tight quarters.

But thats pretty much it..... put it all back together and ta da !

Image
yes i got indecisive and couldn't decide where to put the boost gauge so i just stuck it down near the fuse box.
Image

the gauges were $175 won on auction on ebay......guy sells em in his store on there for $100 each.
The adapter from merridian was $20 as was the ugly rad hose sensor holder that i aint using ! (from super cheap) (its 34mm diam incase your getting one)

Next is the roll bar..... enough putting it off ! i'm sick of being told i can't go on track with my roof down !!!

Oh and yes the gauges do change colour !!!!! they come with a remote and have 3 colour settings..... and i would not pay for DEFi's when these look as good as they do....... i was skeptical when i was buying them because they were so cheap..... but they look great and work fine...... and yes they do the stupid start up dance thing!!! They have warning buzzers and you can set the warning light/ buzzer with the remote...... pretty cool i thought.

Nice write up, all the photos are great. For the coolant temp I have one of these on both my MX-5s, much nicer than the in hose jobbies.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.
